Reviewer's comments
"An odd choice by the builder to only use the Tut1 assets with his 13th release, while others usually would do it with their very first as they learn the ropes of buildng. But it shows that this builder has experience as it is very comptently built and presents a solid level of about 20 minutes, which due to the limited assets available however, is very simple and rather boring to get through. "Been there, done that way too many times"-vibes all around. Flip switch, open door, kill ninja - repeat 6 times. On the positive side, I liked some of the lighting work and the use of features not available with the original editor release, the circling burner, pushing a rolling ball and a few diagonal walls. The obvious softlock near the end after the teleport should obviously have been avoided though." - MichaelP (05-Feb-2024)
"Another level where I can't technically fault much but it's still barely more than an alternative tutorial level, with a lot of floor levers to be used, sometimes in row or just at the end of a longer corridor (which feels pretty pointless), classical traps and platforming and a very linear layout. It's hard not to repeat reviews of previous levels of this builder, but we've seen a lot of those clean but not exactly exciting levels before and just because this is a new release doesn't make this any more worthwhile. No secrets to find in 12 minutes (sorry, Phil)." - manarch2 (08-Oct-2021)
"Another competent release from the always reliable Opaque79. However, I was a little disappointed with this one, because it was so short that I felt as if the builder had lost interest in it along the way and just decided to get what he'd done out to the public. I was through in about 24 minutes, probably less than 10 for manarch2. However, it's pleasant enough for the short time you spend here, finding assorted pickups and pushing assorted levers to move along while disposing of ninjas in between. Nothing new or innovative here, just old-fashioned raiding in Egyptian style." - Phil (12-Jul-2021)
"It’s what they call a ‘lunch break level’. Gameplay is linear and on the easy side; fluent, but a little boring to begin with; it gathers momentum as it progresses, though it never becomes the kind of game that gets your heart racing. Initially, a snippet of this was available for download under the header of a ‘Tut1 Challenge’, which makes it sound like a new competition proposed by Marksdad, but the level is the result of the builder’s first forays into TRNG scripting (hence the rotating pharaohs, here breathing fire rather than spouting some sort of liquid) and using Tomb Editor (diagonal walls). Additionally, Lara has been graced with a fuzzy shadow in place of the default octagon, which may constitute an infringement of the builder’s self-imposed rules (which stipulate ‘using only the Tut1 assets provided with the TRLE’); the case is pending before the CAS. On the other hand, the builder having added the missing rollingball sample is unconditionally to be applauded.
Texturing and lighting are of a high standard, as is customary with this builder. The map is permeated by a subdued reddish tint, which is a sound colour scheme that works well for most of the level, but clashes with the blue sky you can see in a few places near the end. In Tut1 levels, it’s not uncommon for the nailed planks texture (originally used for a modern trapdoor in Coastal) to appear in odd contexts, and so it does here, too: it’s used for lining the walls of water pools (not an efficient way of preventing leaks, is it?). For similar reasons, I customarily object to the inclusion of the Angkor lion as a prop in Egyptian environments, and this is another case where I have to do so.
Generally speaking, I should have liked the map to be organised in areas with distinctive characters of their own, as opposed to a string of rooms in which each element could just as well be swapped for another. Also, this ‘tomb’ looks particularly pristine throughout, as though the guy in charge of keeping the torches alight also ran a floor polisher over the place an hour before Lara entered; even the vegetation that is seen encroaching in some places looks carefully manicured. I’m aware of the fact that making a place fall apart and thus look truly ancient—as Piega did in the initial area of Catacomb Towers, for example—is more difficult than keeping it perfectly preserved; but if you go that extra mile, you (and your players) shall be rewarded sevenfold." - Mulf (17-Jun-2021)
"Ryan is probably the safest player when designing and it's much needed after I saw tons of weird levels which either worked or not. On the other hand, I would like him to be a bit braver and step at least a millimeter beyond the safe boundaries. There's no acid rain there unless you add it." - DJ Full (25-May-2021)
"Sometimes a short, straightforward level can be a bit of a tonic if you’ve recently spent a lot of time playing long, complex games. So it was for me with this blameless little level. It’s traditional, but with a few unexpected twists, and it’s very nicely built. If you fancy a level with a certain charm that won’t have you rushing to a walkthrough all the time, I could certainly recommend this one." - Jay (22-May-2021)
"First like to thank you for sending me another link to be able to download this game. For some reason wouldn't get pass my browser security but once I downloaded it my antivirus found nothing, which is good thing. For me this was a very pleasant level. Wasn't too easy wasn't frustrating was sit back enjoy TR level. I felt the TR original vibes. When it comes to textures & any source of graphics I'm not too picky. I look for the gaming & the TR vibes the most. Thanks for taking the time to build TR game. I know takes a lot of time & effort to build these levels. I appreciate you builders for doing so. Cheers!" - ShadowZia (09-May-2021)
"Another typically dependable offering from this dependable builder. It's probably not the best choice for those raiders seeking something on the more challenging side of the spectrum, as nothing here will require you to ponder your next move, but what's on offer here is perfectly acceptable nonetheless. The environments have been assembled competently and with care, the atmosphere is up to scratch and there is at least adequate entertainment here for less discerning players. Shame about the abrupt ending though, but you can't have it all, I suppose." - Ryan (07-May-2021)
"Quite a throwback here, and a bold one at that, with a level made entirely using tut1 objects and texutres. The result is surprisingly fun, although quite simple and straightforward — just like the tut1 levels we used to get by the heaps much earlier on. There are a few "twists" along the way, such as diagonal walls and a rotating flame-breathing statue, but otherwise this should be a pleasant and relaxing time to most players. My only complain is that the ending came too abruptly, shortly after placing the two cartouches, but I suppose there's only so much you can do with tut1. 20 minute. 05/21" - Treeble (02-May-2021)
"What a nice little level to play. Beautifully textured and lit with straightforward gameplay that even so, had my head scratching as to how I was going to get up to that floor lever, lol. So, if you are a player new to TRLE and want something to get your beak wet, this is the perfect level to introduce you into the wonderful world of TRLE. Very appropriate for beginner players." - Lizard Queen (29-Apr-2021)
"For those in the mood of a thoroughly traditional 30 minute raid in a Tut1 environment, this typically dependable Opaque level should absolutely do the trick. The construction is everywhere solid;lighting and textures are applied with a veterans eye;and (aside, perhaps, for a few flip effects) there are no surprises anywhere - even the first rolling boulder is positively harmless. No technical or imaginative boundaries are pushed anywhere;but I enjoyed the flame objects (particularly the rotating statue);and the linearity of the gameplay is nothing if not therapeutic." - Orbit Dream (27-Apr-2021)
"This time it seems that the author has not put a lot of effort into completing the level; it is a short level, quite dark and easy to play, with some traps, few enemies, as always well textured but with no interesting puzzles or situations that make you think a bit; just pick up a few artifacts to open doors and little else. In any case, it has a good design and if you want to have a quiet good time without many surprises, I recommend it. Enjoyable." - Jose (26-Apr-2021)
"The overall look and feel of this level was very much Tomb Raider. The level even played similar to what a regular Tomb Raider would play like. There were no abnormalities or confusing sections, as everything was designed for a purpose. That being said, there was definitely more room for creative freedom. The puzzles and overall layout of the level could have been a little more complicated and mind intensive, though I do appreciate the linearity of it all. If there were any secrets in this level, I did not find them, but there was definitely room to have 1 or 2. Keep up the great work, and bring us some more of these fun levels!!" - Mizakiharuno (23-Apr-2021)
