Reviewer's comments
"I do like the Scottish settings and, not having played one for some time, I was certainly in the mood to appreciate this. There are a lot of switches to figure out in the initial section and, having got myself into a complete tangle, I went to check the walkthrough, only to find that, as usual, I’d done everything in the wrong order and made life difficult for myself. Sigh. Anyway, if you keep your wits about you, you should find plenty to enjoy here. The exploration is fun, there aren’t many enemies and nice use is made of the motorbike." - Jay (06-Mar-2024)
"A really nice and relaxed level, maybe except from the brazier object which doesn't give a hint. Good lighting also. Yes it's possible to softlock here so just don't drive the bike into THAT hole." - DJ Full (05-Mar-2023)
"This castle level is solid and well builded; I liked the architecture, the texturization is good too, there are too dark areas but I found enough flares; the rooms are well ornated and the environments convincent. The gameplay was not so good for me; the builder doesn't give enough hints and it's easy you miss something and get stuck, even when there are many shortcuts. In the room with the crocs, if you discover the nearby secret you don't need the crowbar to get the first gem. The enemies are well placed, but the guns and ammo appear too late, when you hardly need them. Anyway an interesting level with some creative touches. Take a try." - Jose (22-May-2022)
"Well, I agree there should be some kind of indication as to how many targets there are in the final part, as the one outside the building can very easily be missed. Apart from that design flaw (I'd call it that way, even though I understand many builders make that kind of mistake on occasion), it's a nice Scottish Castle/Maybe Jungle level, designed as such in a very classic way, and the atmosphere is fitting, especially the sounds. The enemies, guards and dogs, are well placed. I thought the library book puzzle was a little hit-and-miss for whatever reason, and the doors on both sides of that room became somehow boring after a while. The goon was a nice touch even though he had a very strange accent, and so was the bike use and even the bridge. Hmm... I found it overall enjoyable." - Jorge22 (21-Aug-2021)
"Another sturdy offering from this reliable builder, maybe not quite as good as Examination of the Sphinx, but definitely not far off. The Scottish Castle environment is beautifully textured and very well constructed and you get a nice gameplay balance between the outskirts of the castle and the underground caves. Gameplay itself isn't especially complex on the puzzling side of things, but there's a fair amount of ground to cover in terms of exploration and you have to be observant at all times, particularly in terms of shooting the targets, but it's sufficiently enjoyable stuff. The motorcycle sequence was also a neat touch. The only slight annoyances were the faulty animations for the wall buttons and the overpowering dinosaur attacks, but not enough to spoil an otherwise enjoyable and well-rounded experience." - Ryan (20-Aug-2021)
"A catchy title always grabs my attention. There's nothing "lost" here, there are no "pyramids" to explore, and the brief moniker perfectly captures the essence of this level. The pleasant surroundings brought back fond memories of the Ynys Witrin series of many years back, and I had a grand time during the two hours I spent playing and writing a walkthrough. There's nothing here beyond the reach of the beginning raider trying to hone his or her skills, although a few more camera clues would have been helpful. You need to find the three secrets in order to be fully armed to deal with the assortment of enemies you meet along the way, but they aren't unreasonably hidden. There perhaps should have been some hint as to how many targets needed to be located and shattered, but I've covered all that in the walkthrough. The motorbike is put to good and extended use with no special driving skills required. Well done, Astraf." - Phil (19-Aug-2021)
"As usual another entertaining offer from this author. Here we have an odd mix between a scotland castle and a jurassic jungle, but everything is well blended and the final result is pleasant. Some textures (if I'm not wrong) are edited to give a more cartoonish aspect. The gameplay is quite intuitive and various. I really loved the possibility to play two slightly different stories, depending on how you interact with a character." - Teone (02-Aug-2021)
"A really nice level! I loved the atmosphere and the puzzles, I especially liked the interaction with the enemy in two different ways by experiencing two different adventures. Unfortunately I experienced bugs which gave me some difficulties. The switches do not activate if Lara does not stay on the sector for a while because some animations are wrong; the final mask did not appear even though I had shot all the targets. I really liked the use of textures (apart from some inaccuracies on some walls) and the use of lights. I really liked the bike and I enjoyed riding it! The music in the right places is also excellent. I liked the dialogues, but being not very good at listening to English I would have liked the subtitles.  Overall, one of the best levels I've ever played! Good job!" - ilariacroft (31-Jul-2021)
"I really enjoyed playing this level. The atmosphere is amazing and I like that there is a story to it or that there is rather some kind of plot, cause it makes it much more interesting and intriguing. I think it’s important to add that this level reminds me of TR 3 The Lost Artifact, and that is one of the reasons I enjoyed it so much since I absolutely love The Lost Artifact. All the puzzles in the game seem to be challenging enough. I think impressive part is that you have a choice of which way to chose or rather which plot twist to chose at certain point in the game. ( Spolier ) you meet a gangster and you can decide if you want to help him or to kill him, depending on what you chose to do the finale part of the level can be more or less challenging. I definitely like that type of levels and the fact that you have a choice in TRLEs, it makes it more realistic I suppose. I wish the level was longer!" - Lina La (28-Jul-2021)
"(8) Gameplay & Puzzles: This is a medium-difficulty adventure that took me almost 2 hours to complete; I think if the gameplay flow had been more clear, then it would have taken me significantly less time. More on the gameplay flow in a moment. First, the good stuff: it's mostly exploration focused, and it's pleasant, with the player uncovering new areas and finding ways to connect them together. Helping the NPC was a neat touch, too. There's only one real puzzle, and I enjoyed it -- it's an interesting pushblock puzzle early on in the game. There are some "spot the hidden book in the bookshelf" and "spot the hidden target" tasks, but I wouldn't call them puzzles. Traps are very minimal/nothing special, and the platforming is super straight-forward. Stuff that I think needed improvement: The major issue that disrupts gameflow involves attempting to access an outdoor area with a pool and a crimson crystal. It is adjacent to a library building. These two areas are connected by a crowbar-able door, and it made sense to me that I needed to find a crowbar to gain access to this outdoor area with a pool. So, I spent ages running around trying to find a crowbar (maybe it was hidden in a bush somewhere?), however this is not the correct next course of action. The next course of action involves using a lit torch on 2 statues outside, and they did not look to me like interactive objects that can be lit. I think that there needed to be a camera hint, such as Lara looking at these statues, to indicate that they are suspicious and worthy of attention. A couple of other minor issues are: a) there is a giant cave in which you press a button on one end, run for a while to the other end of the cave, and press another button, and it's just dull gameplay. Surely the player can do something more interesting? b) The last 25% or so of the game is not very interesting or engaging in terms of tasks. (7) Enemies, Objects & Secrets: Not many enemies here; the "raptor scare" fight was great, and the T-Rex fight was enjoyable as well. I felt like the ending was very anti-climatic without a boss fight, considering the sweet ammo accumulated. Furthermore, the NPC that Lara talks to builds suspense by talking about his mean brother. I thought I would be fighting his brother later on, as a boss fight, but I never met him. Unless he was one of the generic goons with a gun, in which case the storytelling is not clear. Or is the brother supposed to be the T-Rex? There's good use of decorative objects, especially plants and rubble, to bring the world to life. The unfolding bridge object was a really cool concept. On the flip side, there were some buggy/wonky issues associated with interactive objects: the crimson crystal is not visible in the inventory; a button has a wrong animation (Lara pulls down instead of pressing it, and this seasoned builder shouldn't be letting these kind of whoopsies go unchecked); and the door which opens after flipping 5 books was buggy for me. It did not open right after flipping the 5 books, and I had to wait awhile for it to open. Finally, some thoughts regarding the bike: when exploring on bike, Lara will die instantly while riding over certain seemingly-safe zones, which I don't like. You're getting punished for attempting to explore thoroughly. It would have been better to have adjusted the ground geometry so that the player knows it's not possible to explore certain areas with the bike. The bike riding was just buggy at times, with Lara dying instantly whenever the bike bumped into an innocent looking plant object. (9) Atmosphere, Sound & Cameras: The beautiful architecture is the strongest aspect of the level in my opinion. There is a convincing sense of place and excellent room connectivity. For the most part, rocky areas and caverns look very organic and polished, however after crossing the bridge, inserting 2 crimson crystals and sliding down into a cavern area, the initial cave is just one big giant cube and the builder should know better by now. The cutscenes involving Lara helping a NPC were charming and helped to enhance the atmosphere, as was the usage of classic TR3 music cues. Camera hints are decent, but as mentioned above, I feel that Lara should have looked at the 2 statues near the start of the game to indicate that they are suspicious; also, a flyby would have been good when entering the last ruins area, showing the tomb, so that players may be able to identify it as an objective and to associate the target shooting with the tomb. (8) Lighting & Textures: The level as a whole looks pretty good, but a bit more care with regards to occasional misshapen or wallpapered textures would have made the level really standout in a visual sense. Patchwork textures were also not uncommon (in which the seams of a texture do not match the seams of the textures surrounding it). It's mostly a well-lit level, with a few dark underground caves, and the builder is super generous with flares. Overall, it's an enjoyable level, but I was left wanting in terms of the gameplay, especially considering the robustness of 2 of the builder's previous releases, "Examination of the Sphinx" and "Lost Spirit of the Cavemen - Remake". I think if anyone is interested in Astraf's projects, I would strongly recommend these two over "Ruins of the Evening Sun". 8/7/9/8." - nerdfury (27-Jul-2021)
"Firstly, there was a lot to do in a fairly small map. And lots of resources are needed to be found to succeed. The main thing that I enjoyed about this TRLE is the simplicity of the design, there weren't many complex things to do and the hardest part of them all is just figuring out the puzzles. Backwards-and-forwards was a thing in this level but it was bearable due to the size of the map, so you weren't traveling for too long. Traps and set-ups were predictable but figuring out an escape made it more challenging. Good work on this level and I look forward to more from the author! I'd recommend this level for beginners to play as well." - g12STL (26-Jul-2021)
