Reviewer's comments
"Big nostalgia rush here if, like me, you're a fan of the TR1 Egypt genre. I just really love those blue and gold textures. It's quite a short level, but it moves along briskly and manages to pack plenty in, with easy gameplay that would be an excellent choice for the less experienced player. Overall, a pleasant experience, for me." - Jay (16-Mar-2024)
"I enjoyed playing this debut release. It lasts about 30 minutes and progresses very well in a solidly designed setting and is actually not without its (small) challenges and hence keeps you engaged from start to end. Particular mention goes to the three secrets, as here the builder really had a few clever ideas about how to get to them. Enemies are a few panthers and those Atlantean mummies that can also poison you here. Really fun and definitely worth a look." - MichaelP (05-Feb-2024)
"One secret just wastes your time by forcing a double climb. Otherwise it's a quite pleasant escape map, surely recommended for TR1 Egypt fans. Had a bit of everything yet I think it was a bit too short, so maybe a plot twist would be a good idea." - DJ Full (01-Mar-2023)
"Really a good debut. This level is very solid and without bugs. The rooms (all inner) are well builded and well lightened and textured. The secrets are not hard to find, and the tasks are classic and never frustrating. The only thing I didn't like was some hidden switches which forced me to go back to explore previous areas in order to continue moving forward. There is a good use of cameras and sounds, well placed objects and a fluid gameplay to keep the interest. Congratulations Emaraider; sure that you will bring very entertaining levels in the future. Good work!" - Jose (02-Jun-2022)
"First level for Emaraider. I think it's a great start, even if it has some shortcomings. Beautiful setting with Tomb Raider 1 and Unfinished Business feelings. There are no puzzles to think about, but there are traps and exploration is interesting with well-structured and beautiful locations to see. Very strong enemies to take down and, considering that, perhaps I would have preferred to find more weapons and ammunition. Bottom line, it's an interesting, non-frustrating and fun level to play, with minimal challenge and durability, cute rooms, and classic flavor." - TRItalia (03-Dec-2021)
"This level effectively captures the look and feel of what we experienced back in the early days of TR1. And since it uses the TR4 engine, it's a vast improvement over the TR1 levels still being released by some builders today. It's a legitimately short level at about 35 minutes, so I naturally wonder about the hefty 160 MB download. The surroundings are true to the original and everything is well lighted, eliminating any need for flares. The early timed run for the shotgun secret gave me fits for a while, such that my wife could hear my cussin' all the way downstairs on the other side of the house. However, it's worth the effort, as it's the only weapon provided in addition to the pistols, and there are formidable enemies along the way that require beefier ammo than the pistols provide. Other than the shotgun secret there's nothing particularly taxing here, either physically or mentally, but it's nevertheless a remarkably pleasant debut release." - Phil (07-Sep-2021)
"Nostalgic, simple but very fun. i loved all the tr1 vibes and music in this level and the lighting, textures and atmosphere are gorgeous to immerse yourself in but what i liked the most was the gameplay, such great traps and adrenaline moments with the crocodile invasion and tumbling boulders at the start, and then youve got that insane tight timed run to get a secret while trying to avoid spikes, such clever tasks like platforming flips/jumps and using blocks to get to higher places or over fences and then some beautiful rooms and chambers just to explore around in whether it be on foot or in those water chambers and areas. this level has a bit of everything here and i love the variety i only wished it was longer!" - John (23-Aug-2021)
"I concur with the previous reviewers. This is a solid and charming debut effort, but unfortunately the gameplay was on the rather too simplistic side for my liking. The visuals are pleasing and nostalgic and the TR1 feeling is captured nicely (although everything did look a bit monotone, lighting-wise), but sadly the progression was a little too uninvolving. You basically progress from one chamber to another (occasionally with a sense of grandeur), pulling levers, pushing blocks and bumping off the local fauna in the form of panthers, crocodiles and mutants and there's barely any puzzles to offset the feeling of weariness. Wasn't too keen on the overly abrupt ending either. Not at all badly made, but nothing really memorable either." - Ryan (16-Aug-2021)
"I've been knee deep in other levels that I have to say the use of TR1 textures and objects was a critical nostalgic hit on me, I loved it. Gameplay is rather simple although at times it feels like it opens up but I'm not convinced how far off you can explore (and I even reached the finish trigger without ever using the Sapphire Key) what seem like branching paths. I wasn't too keen on the subtle changes to animations/controls (like the now abrupt stops when moving), but overall I enjoyed my time here and I hope we see more from this builder in the future. 30 minutes, 2 secrets. 08/21" - Treeble (15-Aug-2021)
"As the previous reviewer said: a solid debut level. The texturing is clean and room architecture shows potential, even if everything is still boxy and a bit simple at times. The gameplay is okay as well, a bit of platforming, traps and exploration as well as minor usage of pushables, but there's nothing really exciting to find here. The enemy placement as well as the hideout for two of the secrets were fine, but one is not really hidden/on the way(?). Not memorable but a good enough start for this builder. 15 minutes." - manarch2 (12-Aug-2021)
"A solid debut level - this flows reasonably well in a generally linear style, but with a few odd gameplay choices here and there: the two doors near the end which lead to nowhere whatsoever except (in one case) a deadly fall;the shotgun secret (well set up) which was nevertheless presented as part of the games progression;the arbitrary and listless ending, which revealed no purpose for Lara's quest. Lighting was generally bland throughout, and (aside from the usual creepy 'TR1 caves' background audio) atmosphere was lacking throughout. Textures were decently placed, though;as were the enemies - and I liked the choice of the TR1 Lara model. The level was not without challenge here and there;and (unlike many debuts) showed a builder with potential - provided they ensured that their next effort was more cohesively structured." - Orbit Dream (08-Aug-2021)
"This was a good level that would be great for a beginner to practice on and learn more skills. I really enjoyed the modifications such as the sped-up climbing and the surface swimming as well! Small enhancements like that make the game less monotonous and more enjoyable. The map layout was straight-forward for the most part and required no backtracking at all. The secrets were pretty easy to find nonetheless. Great work on this level!" - g12STL (08-Aug-2021)
"(4) Gameplay & Puzzles: This is an easy, short adventure that took me about 30 minutes. The aesthetics are quite good for a debut, and I will go into that more later, but I'm sorry to say that I found the gameplay to be dull and not memorable. You're moving from one area to the next, flipping levers and performing some very basic platforming. There's no interesting platforming/traps/timed runs, etc., and that's no big deal if there are good puzzles, but unfortunately there are no puzzles here. There are a couple of moments where you need to move a pushblock so that you can use it to jump over a fence, however, I want to see more robust problem-solving than that. Aside from the issue of dull gameplay tasks, the gameplay flow feels "off" at times. For example, near the beginning of the adventure, you feel like you are adventuring on the main path, but it is a path only for a secret. Later on, there's a giant temple room with a pool, and a checkerboard ceiling, however there's so few tasks to perform in this giant gamespace. Near the end of the game, there's a room with 3 levers you can use, which opens access to 2 dead-end or "dummy" rooms that have nothing to do with the player's progress. What was the point of this? (7) Enemies, Objects & Secrets: The classic enemies are well placed, startling me a few times. The ending is abrupt and anticlimactic -- shortly before the exit trigger, Lara passes a group of TR1 mummies and I thought I would be engaging some of them in a final fight. There are a few boulder and spike traps here and there, but the traps in general are not utilized in an exciting manner. Object decor is decent, however I noticed that the builder customized Lara's swimming-on-the-surface animation, which was buggy for me. Oftentimes, when I tried to back down into the water from the surface, nothing would happen. (6) Atmosphere, Sound & Cameras: I was not convinced by the architecture/atmosphere; to me, the rooms looked overly boxy. The level would have benefited from a greater variety of room geometry, particularly in the case of ceilings and the brief rocky cavern areas. Adding some different geometry to demonstrate organic formations found within nature would greatly enhance the atmosphere. Classic music cues are used well, although I couldn't hear any sounds coming from the panthers. There are adequate camera hints however the level is missing flybys to build immersion. (7) Lighting & Textures: The lighting for the most part is pleasant, however there are a couple of outdoor areas where the lighting is too flat (the area with no ceiling and 2 crocs, as well as the final outdoor area). It's not a dark level overall, but there are some dark corners that bear further investigation. Unfortunately I didn't find any flare pickups which is not good game design in my opinion (the player only has the flares they start the game with). With regards to man-made interiors, which make up most of the level, the texturing looks pretty good and gives off a warm and fuzzy TR1 Egypt vibe. There are some brief rocky caverns with bad wallpapering, but for the most part the level looks decent. Overall, this is a visually attractive debut, so good job on that. I love classic-themed levels and I'm really glad to see a new builder that does too. However, I do encourage the builder to take time to make memorable gameplay tasks for the players. If the builder's vision is to make an easy level, without much in the way of traps or platforming, that is totally fine -- if this is the case, I encourage brainstorming some creative puzzles. I hope my feedback was constructive to the builder. 4/7/6/7." - nerdfury (07-Aug-2021)
"As betatester of this level, I can say that Emanuele made a very good job with his first custom level! I like the settings that despite being in Egypt (a place used a lot both by Core Design and in the custom levels) I do not find at all obvious. The puzzles are very simple and the enemies are not many, which makes the game very relaxing and this aspect may appeal to less experienced players or those a little more lazy like me! The music is that of the original chapters. What I would improve is the use of the lights that in some points of the level are a bit flat, I would increase the use of the cameras, I would insert some puzzles a bit more challenging and some more enemies or some twists that make the level a little more lively. Apart from these small aspects, I say that this level is a really good debut! I can't wait to play Emanuele's next levels!" - ilariacroft (05-Aug-2021)
"It's pretty decent debut level in TR1 Egypt vibes. Gameplay was pretty simple, mostly straightforward with focus on pulling levers. Still, there were some cool ideas like: push the block to jump over fence to get to other room or some clever traps. Some of Lara animations were quite buggy and they could have been done better. Enemies were pretty good. Atmosphere was quite poor with flat lighting and rooms were quite boxy. Author should take care to make more shadows to not make lighting look flat and boring. Textures were good with some diversity and good looking design. I found few disformed and shrinked textures tho. Most of rooms were well decorated with objects. Overally, I still enjoyed this short and pretty simple level with some good aspects. New author has potential and I hope to see more of him in future! :)" - BlackWolfTR (05-Aug-2021)
