Reviewer's comments
"As the title suggests this is really a classic game and this is certainly not a bad thing as it manages to capture the old style quite well without being a remake or similar. The atmosphere is pretty convincing, there are superbly crafted halls and a very good structure to the whole which also shows in the general progression. Gameplaywise this might not be the most innovative game out there but there is always something to keep you on your toes, and only the slightly overdone ladder/monkeyswing climbing parts that take a lot of time let it down somewhat. The gameplay time to 4:30 hours was a bit too much for what is presented here, as things tend to repeat in some ways and it's not that kind of game you can't stop playing, at least for me. The combination of TR 3 and 4 textures works quite well here, though, I enjoyed the usage of cameras and enemy appearances and even if only one per level, the six secrets were well hidden. In some areas the lighting felt a little dull, though. On the whole another very solid return from a builder of the 'early days' and certainly worth to play even if a little bit too long for its own good." - manarch2 (04-Mar-2023)
"This could be a hit if the lighting was done correctly. I hope it can still be reworked." - DJ Full (06-Jan-2023)
"It's been rather a long time since I played something as resolutely classic and "back to the roots" as this, so this made for a pleasant and nostalgic raid and it's always nice to see a builder return to the fold after many years away from the scene. Although the layout is a bit too asymmetrical throughout (admittedly the similarity factor does get a bit wearying after a while), the scenery throughout is sublime, very well textured and the atmosphere is very well done. You do get various weapon pickups multiple times across all levels, so Phil does possibly have a point in saying that these levels were intended to be separate releases. Gameplay does tend to revolve around push puzzles, long swims, traps and timed runs, but they're luckily not repetitive enough to be an annoyance. The terminal bug with the mechanical scarab really should have been removed before release, though." - Ryan (22-Dec-2022)
"I mostly agree with eRIC's review. The "old" in the name of the game is significant: the included Readme says the levels were built twenty years ago, forgotten, and only recently put in playable form and released. It does have a very classic look and feel to it. I found the gameplay sometimes a bit annoying: you are in big, hard to traverse levels, and if you don't know what to do next, it's either consult the walkthrough, or put up with laborious and potentially fruitless wandering around. I had to look at the available video walkthough a couple of times. But I found that the gameplay got a bit better with each new level. A minor annoyance that you couldn't use the crowbar on some doors, even though they worked on other doors with the same textures. Despite its age (twenty years of other level builders having new ideas), the gameplay has some ideas that felt creative and fresh. On the visual side, although it uses standard assets, it uses them well and it looks good. The level The Sanctuary had a bug that made it impossible to climb ladders. It's mentioned in the Readme, but the connection to ladder climbing isn't obvious. (It does mention ladder issues, but I think that's a different problem.) I recommend reading the Readme, and looking at the forum thread if you're affected by the bug. In summary it's a "technical" game from start to end. The levels have roughly constant quality with slight improvements towards the end. I would have liked if there were more." - tuxraider (19-Dec-2022)
"This is really a mini-game, as it consists of six totally unrelated stand-alone levels that each may require two hours or more to play. As the builder explains in his readme, most of the work was done 20 years ago but never released until now. The levels were apparently intended as individual raids, as items essential for progression in one level are frequently found as well in another level. From what I can remember of the original Asphaeings series, there's not nearly the same player-friendliness here in the lighting department. Most of the action takes place in dark interior settings, and even the few parts played outdoors are shrouded in relative darkness. This fact alone made the 13 hours I invested more of an ordeal toward the end than a joyful experience, but there's plenty here to keep the player occupied and attentive. Pickups never become an issue, and I had many more flares and ammunition supplies than I could ever use. My chief complaint is the lack of any explosive arrows for the crossbow, combined with the fact that you don't get the grenade gun until the last level. I'm surprised the builder released that last level in its present condition, as there's a significant bug involving the Mechanical Scarab that affects Lara's climbing ability and thus stops progression in its tracks. Somehow Doggett TV was able not only to diagnose the problem but also to come up with a workaround that he demonstrates in his posted video. In all, the game is a commendable efforts which stands up well under the test of time, but I feel the builder would have been better off releasing these levels one at a time." - Phil (18-Dec-2022)
"9h30 of classic raiding with this adventure, and it was good raiding from start to finish, even with some possible backtracking depending on what you do. Three of the 6 levels have outside areas, the levels are textured with care, and the different technical aspects of levelbuilding are excellent. All levels have in common the necessity of exploration as the areas are not small , with many side intricate areas. There is everything we can expect from a classic raiding , from extended torch puzzle to some timed sequences even one with monkeyswing. The difficulty level is well measured, the most difficult here is the sometimes falsely symmetrical architecture of some areas that can drives you nuts if you haven't spot something important. This said I was stuck only once in each level but i was stuck for long. Good atmosphere. Found only 1 of the 6 secrets. Very well though out game with an intuitive progression most of the time , anyway one right up my alley." - eRIC (12-Dec-2022)
