Reviewer's comments
"I almost skip this one because my antivirus was going crazy, but boy am I glad I didn’t because this mod is definitely a gem. Everything staring from over-the-top funny story to design of locations is really well done. It really makes You think if Lara is maybe a little bit psychotic for murdering people for some treasures. Bridge itself and locations around are absolutely beautiful, maybe a little empty if You wonder to far, but beautiful nether less. Puzzles are simple, but enjoyable. I definitely recommend this mod." - El Dorado (28-Dec-2023)
"Its taken me a while but I finally played my first TEN level and this was an awesome intro to this incredible tool! The level was a joy to play and looked amazing even if it wasn't in TEN I think it would have looked great! Some awesome effects as well, The bubbles and shadows being highlights in that department. This level is must play! Highly recommended GG Gecko!" - Feats (23-Nov-2023)
"It's been a long time since I played a custom level, but I was super curious to see not only what the talented GeckoKid would produce but also to see many of the innovations that are capable with Tomb Editor /TEN. And boy, I was not disappointed. Jackie has presented a spectacular and lifelike panorama of the Tower Bridge in London, not only in the architecture but the atmosphere as well. So exciting to see classic vehicles, weapons and enemies working just as they should. I encountered two very minor bugs - when I flicked the switch at the end of the big timed run, the trapdoor dropped but the collision remained leaving Lara walking on thin air, and in the final scene after taking the truck jump, Lara landed in the street but didn't trigger the ending cutscene leaving me pondering what to do and running into invisible collisions in the street. A quick re-run of the jump worked the next time. There is a stack of 'WOW' eye candy throughout the level, and it really is an impressive achievement. Well done, great level!" - EssGee (02-Nov-2023)
"I had not played a custom level in a long time, so used the package update that came in for this one to give it go as I had some time on my hands, and what a treat it turned out to be (not a surprise really ;) The architecture, the visuals, the whole cinematography and the dialogue are great beyond words. Make sure you do collect enough of the secrets to do the mine cart tour and do it more than once or you will miss out on some great fun. Gameplay has its moments and also has a nice and easy flow to it, but overall really stands back a bit behind the visual showcase this is, with little to know puzzle elements included, but that one timed run was clearly a highlight. Also probably a few too many guards and such to be killed along the way, but the boss guy was a pretty cool touch. All in all, an adventure absolutely not to be missed, with plenty of community touches thrown in - fantastic work, Jackie!" - MichaelP (16-Oct-2023)
"This had me grinning like a boy from start to finish, for multiple reasons actually. For one, since GeckoKid finally got to release a new level after a long hiatus I'd been very excited but, for whatever reason, the game just wouldn't play on my current system — a weird memory error which I'll chalk up to the ancient OS I'm still using. I've been due for an upgrade for a while but real life keeps postponing that. I don't know what's changed but the latest version, released just this week, miraculously worked on my system. That alone brought me a weird feeling of joy I hadn't felt in a while, and this truly is a gift that keeps on giving. The level is beautiful and the scale is definitely impressive. I've never been to London and I'd just hope it isn't quite as violent, as this does seem to focus more on combat than anything else, but don't be fooled as there's a lot of ground to cover here and I don't recall the last time I was so cheerfully running pointlessly around just "for the sights", as it were. The cutscenes are amazing, the way Jackie has used iconic quotes from previous games in all new dialogues is also pure joy. Everything just adds up so neatly and perfectly. This is my first TEN experience and I'm still in awe from all the things I've seen here, all the little details and extra effects, and I'm bound to believe this is definitely definitely a landmark in our community. It has to be. In addition to all of that, I find a true privilege to have been a friend of Jackie's since the earliest days of the TRLE (boy are we old), and seeing how he's surrounded by so many like-minded people, which he gets to feature in this level in different capacities, and the fact that this level was also born as a tribute to those we've lost... all of it makes this a perfect addition not just for the TR world but also for the community surrounding it as well. (The Live Experience DLC when?). tl;dr: Brilliant. 90 minutes, 8 secrets. 10/23" - Treeble (15-Oct-2023)
"Well it's here at last! Jackie's long awaited comeback to TRLE is finally here and how was it you ask? He's rusty but there's some salvation to be found let's dive in! We're greeted with the most awkward dialogue since bjorkraider's the experiment and it's possibly more awkward! It's kind of a frankenstein stiched up unified monster that consists of fan favourites one liners and a swear word on Lara's end but Jenni sounds good as always and I'm giving a higher score to the sound just based on her ability to keep a straight face while saying all that! So basically we start off with Lara in desperate need of a snow globe for Winston and Jackie is giving us some of that "classic Lara goodness" by giving her that "antihero attitude" the classic fans desperately want Lara to have because they don't feel cool? So we blast some innocent workers brains out all over the escalators but no matter, they've been working for SLINC so it's probably deserved and it's a fan project so I won't be giving it too much thought! However the annoying pickup catchphrase quickly gave me something to think about so that's TEN points to Slytherin I'm afraid. I don't know if Jackie was trying to test the limits of the engine with the multiple sounds or the players patience, the enemies were quite boring and I wasn't really expecting him to turn it into Alfred Hitchcock's the birds but if you can give us Natla at costa coffee then we get more crows and maybe spiders? Not sure if they're supported by TEN yet? Spamming pickups, I hate it when builders treat me like I'm a five year old who can't manage their recourses I'm a big girl now hit me with the bad guys! Now as for the secrets they're pictures we don't care about maybe they could've been snow globes instead of selfies with people I do not know and that Steve of War kid. I like the train on loop it makes the underground feel alive but at times the layout is too much like aldwich, I like the new shadow instead of that silly blob from the classics, the water room with the switch and boxes was fun and was creative despite being small. Jackie's idea of level design is throwing an enemy at you and the minute you leave this room there's another enemy not to worry as he has supplied you with more than enough supplies to handle him or Dr.Willard. London Bridge area is stunning, loved the open world feeling but I wish there more to do than just shoot crows and finding Jackie's show off selfies of random influencers if we can call them that. I couldn't resist jumping in the river only to be distracted by how crystal clear it was that he forgot to make it foggy. Lighting is lifeless and I wish he would've not reused the same guys with guns maybe spice it up with a thug instead of a crow? Okay maybe it is turning into Hitchcock's the birds but it could've been spiders and rats instead. The tower itself was disappointing very bare bones platforming There's an obscene lack of flyby and use of fixed camera angles considering how much effort was put into the environment which is the highlight of this level it really is breathtaking. Not nearly enough puzzles or key items but far too many selfies that ultimately end up feeling like this was meant for an inner circle of friends release, it's just awkward. I loved the secret I could get to by using the boat wish there was more open exploration because when Jackie does it right he does it right, the Easter eggs were just no though. I thought the fuzzy effect in the images were cute and gave a retro vibe like life is strange. The shine on the holsters was lovely, couldn't keep my eyes off it and the glow in the windows was nice The luds gate sequence area was cool and the water effect used in there was nice. I wish you basically didn't walk straight through the whole level without much opposition and challenges though it's kinda giving me flashbacks of tomb raider anniversary's style units only without the developers talking, except in that one place where they gave us that history lesson about the bridge... That was too much talking. However the level was enjoyable despite it's obvious short comings, but one last thing the title just bugs me so much because it's sending the message that tomb raider fans haven't got an original bone in their body, seeing as it's lifted off an embarrassing cash crab in Camden Town. So I declare this level an oversized style unit! Which is a pity considering it's on TEN but expected due to it's reputation for ignoring requests more than crystal dynamics. Jackie's gameplay in the beginning was so good but I'm gonna give him the benefit of the doubt and blame the engine maybe it's just not baked all the way yet." - Be Nolee (08-Oct-2023)
"In terms of visuals, this level is extremely well-crafted. Textures, lighting, objects, and the architecture are all amazing, and the Tower Bridge has been beautifully recreated. Gameplay, on the other hand, could be spiced up more in my opinion. You mostly shoot plenty of enemies, use switches and items to open doors, and perform some very basic jumps. There is a timed run that was very fun, but it is, however, an optional task. If gameplay would be more inventive and engaging, I would consider this level not only great, but absolutely gorgeous. All in all, I recommend this level highly because of the environments, which are some of the most beautifully crafted among all custom levels." - Samu (02-Oct-2023)
"I have not only mixed feelings about this level, but actually a mix of two completely opposite impressions, which makes this level most difficult to review. On one hand, we have an amazing level in terms of vista, atmosphere, sound, music and graphics/architecture, but on the other hand, we have quite a simple and ridiculously easy shooter with a few brief moments of platforming and almost a complete lack of puzzles. In terms of gameplay and puzzles, and even basic story, this level is a disaster. In terms of graphics and sound, this level is a masterpiece. Basically, this level is an action and exploration of a large and very beautiful map, and other important aspects of a Tomb Raider game are simply not there. This level seems more like a showcase, that shows what the new engine can do, than like a level that is enjoyable to play. In terms of gameplay, there's absolutely nothing new and nothing interesting, and in my humble opinion, this is also a huge disadvantage of the new engine. Without special NGLE triggers, flipeffects, conditions, global triggers, organizers and stuff, I don't think that the new engine can offer anything we haven't already seen for thousands of times before. Gameplay is definitely the most important aspect and element of a good TRLE game, puzzles and riddles are a must-be, with various traps, conditions and sequences of perfectly timed events, and the powerful NGLE script with advance script triggers, action triggers, events and conditions is still far superior than the new engine, as far as I can see in the levels made using the newest engine. Therefore, the review of this level is very low for gameplay and puzzles/traps/objects, and very high in terms of audio/sound and atmosphere." - Nina Croft (20-Aug-2023)
"This Geckokid level is perfect. There are no other words to describe it. The use of TEN for this adventure is just incredible. The author managed to do things I NEVER thought I'd see in a Tomb Raider level, and I loved the little wagon ride to visit the Tower Bridge underground. I think this has to be one of the most beautiful levels I've ever played, as the architecture is simply beautiful. The bridge is beautiful. The station is beautiful. The restaurants and stores are beautiful. The parks are beautiful. Everything is beautiful. At times, I almost felt I was in London. The level isn't hard at all, and that's a really good thing, because beginners can easily get the hang of this new TEN engine. I found all the secrets and was delighted to unlock the bonus part, which brings this adventure to a fitting conclusion. I have to say that I'm surprised that some players are being put below 8 in the gameplay of this level, because it absolutely doesn't deserve it. In conclusion, I can only congratulate Geckokid for this great level." - Bigfoot (15-Aug-2023)
"Wow, what a heartwarming experience! The architecture of the real Tower Bridge/UK is imposing, you really feel like you are there on that rainy evening. The many new objects do the rest to create a brilliant atmosphere. I really liked the sometimes simple but effective gameplay, so there is plenty of time to explore which this level is perfect for, but don't worry there are plenty of enemies. The toilet scene was hilarious, LOL. Another surprise was the lore ride with some info about the building. And last but not least, as a collector of all 10 Secrets you unlock the mansion with the gift for Winston, the music here was so cool, but also in the rest of the level. The new TEN features were used perfectly here, unlike other levels they were never annoying or frustrating. Criticism can be that you can sometimes see the end of the world (street) and that some areas are a bit too empty, (friendly) people you meet except the enemies unfortunately none what is a bit curious in a big city. In the underwater area with the divers I would have used more lighting, there it was very dark. The credits were partly cut off for me (16:9) which was a shame. Apart from these minor details, a perfect and atmospheric trip with Lara, thanks for this great adventure!" - Crofti (05-Aug-2023)
"As a semi-realistic recreation of a real place, while a fully playable level this is mainly a showcase of the new TombEngine, and it does a great job of that, with detail everywhere along with a giant scale, and a lot of custom objects and usage of new effects and interactions that the new engine allows. The lighting and texturing are also great, and the rainy twilight atmosphere is perfectly captured throughout.
The main path is quite simple, with what challenge there is mostly coming from combat (although you are pretty loaded on gear to deal with that), however, most of the map is optional, and while a lot seems to be just to add to the sense of place, the secrets provide some more challenges and reasons to explore. The way vehicles are used to open up the map is also well-done, as you soon find a Jeep that just speeds up moving a bit, then later a Boat and Quadbike that both make backtracking much simpler when exploring anything you left earlier. Finding enough secrets also provides a nice bonus segment. There's a story that doesn't take itself too seriously but does provide some motivation and a goal to work for. While the focus is much more on enjoying the atmosphere and detail than the gameplay, it provides a very worthwhile experience in that regard, although maybe it could have demonstrated a few more new environmental interactions that TombEngine must allow for. I've been to London a bit but haven't properly been around the Tower Bridge area, so I can't say how faithful the main recreations are, but it feels convincing despite the obvious liberties taken to be a TR level, and this great showcase for what the new engine can do technically." - Mman (01-Jul-2023)
"What a truly splendid return from another of the masters! GeckoKid truly has managed to get to grips with the new TEN engine and has succeeded in bringing us an absolutely mesmerising raiding experience. The attention to detail in a level of this magnitude is absolutely staggering, the object placement is second to none and the Easter eggs from past Tomb Raider games were a very sweet, nostalgic addition. Gameplay is nicely balanced and not too much on the difficult side, mainly centered on exploration with a couple of puzzles, although the guards stationed in and around the Tower Bridge can be surprisingly resilient but supplies and weaponry are plentiful so it shouldn't be too much of an issue. The "Experience" itself was also a masterful touch and wonderfully executed. I did miss one secret Polaroid so maybe this calls for a replay in the future. Amazing stuff." - Ryan (11-Jun-2023)
"A short level that looks very good. Visually, this really seems to make good use of the TEN engine. That tower really is impressive, but other areas look pretty good too. But: The gameplay is a too simple and uninspired. You can basically rush through the level, kill some cops, hit some switches, ride the bike, and it's done. It's wasted potential, it's almost sad how all that great architecture and space remains unused. Especially because the new engine provides unlimited possibilities in customized gameplay. This level is mostly eye candy, good enough that I recommend playing this level just to see it." - tuxraider (20-May-2023)
"This level shows the great possibilites of the new TEN engine and how levels will look in future. First of all, it's a great concept to recreate a real-life location in TR on such a huge scale. This certainly wouldn't be possible without TEN. I was amazed by the monumentality of the towers and how enormous the render distance was; I could see the other side of the river which was like 40 or more sectors away. The level is very detailed as well. Lots of diverse textures and objects to decorate places - the trains were awesome! Gameplay-wise the level is good as well although without any puzzles or more complicated stuff. The level focuses mainly on exploration and platforming. It was nice to see vechicles from different tomb raiders. One thing I would like to complain about are some of the empty areas with no gameplay and weaker design. Oh and also I experienced some visual glitches in the inventory. All in all, this level is somewhat of a milestone in TRLE world. It shows the great possibilities of TEN. It's visually stunning and it mixes a lot of stuff from different TRs. TEN is the future of TRLE world and it is to be expected to see another monumental levels in the near future. Recommended!" - BlackWolfTR (29-Apr-2023)
"Damn TEN is cool, but I think I'm going to stick with TRNG for now, personal preference. What Gecko achieves technically with this level is outstanding, awesome job! I loved the design of the tower, the cute picture secrets, and the little shop was amazing. It is a short TRLE, but it's the perfect length for the story. Recommend everyone should play it to see the scenery." - JimmyBeon (15-Apr-2023)
"GeckoKid did made a great job with architecture, cameras and animations. Visuals are great too. Too bad the level portrays Miss Croft as an evil capricious woman and mass murderer. Too many kills from start to finish for a snow globe. Some uneventful discovery as well, however some parts were good fun, the puzzle with the 2 pools , the acrobatics in the higher rooms , and the welcome little tour with the coal wagon to discover the tower bridge history. Despite the gratuitous killings , recommanded to see what seems to be a real life monument in a Tr level and for some nice surprises." - eRIC (26-Mar-2023)
"Very good !!! love the new TEN !!!" - Juno Jim (19-Mar-2023)
"Right from the opening sequence, I just knew I was in for a treat and I can honestly say London has never looked better. Jackie really has achieved wonders with the new TEN engine and when you get a bit of respite from bumping off the baddies, do enjoy being a tourist for a while (you even get to ride on the Tower Bridge Experience). Gameplay is interesting and great fun and I did like the little ‘shout outs’ to the original levels with the Natla coffee van and bus going to Aldwych. Sadly I missed two of the secret photos, but perhaps that may be a good reason to play this again before too long. It’s been some time since this talented builder’s last release, but it really has been so worth the wait." - Jay (17-Mar-2023)
"What an incredible looking level. I can't begin to imagine the amount of work involved in building something like this. The architecture was amazing and Tower Bridge itself simply wonderful. Somehow managed to miss out the timed run and therefore the harpoon gun, so just had to avoid the scuba divers, which was quite easy. Didn't find enough secrets to do the full ride on the mine cart or the bonus section but still had a very enjoyable time with this level. There was some very slight lagging now and then, but nothing bad enough to spoil the game play. A fairly easy level that was well worth playing." - StormChaser (14-Mar-2023)
"A visual treat, as expected from this builder! Built in TEN, it gives us the most realistic city we've ever seen and almost a perfect match to the actual area of the London Tower Bridge. The gameplay though is not quite in par with the visuals. Definitely not bad, just not very creative. Mostly exploring, which of course is one the best aspects of TR, some platforming which includes a nice timed run, and easily killing enemies with the almost unlimited ammo we found. But overall it is a very immersive adventure which I very heartily recommend. Took me a bit less than two hours to complete with all secrets, actually one hour playing and another one admiring the scenery. I will surely revisit this level in the future, something I rarely do." - billie2001 (13-Mar-2023)
"The sheer scale, passion and sense for realism in even the smallest details in this level is rather unprecedenced, leaving many 'wow' moments, most of them the fantastic bridge which has another experience in a very special museum tour. The gameplay is somewhat neglected, though, as there is really not much to do here else than exploration and a bit of platforming; except, of course, for shooting dozens of guards and workers on the way - was the present really worth all the trouble? Anyway, a incredibly atmospheric game and one not to miss out. Finished in 35 minutes." - manarch2 (12-Mar-2023)
"This was an amazing enjoyable game. Got some good laughs with my way of gameplay, but in the end was all enjoyable. Everything look amazing felt like a live tour of the tower bridge. In hopes for more but longer adventure. TEN engine really advance its look in graphics structure & sharpness in details. All sort of engines have their defaults. But in overall the level was satisfying & enjoyable. Well done. Cheers!" - ShadowZia (12-Mar-2023)
"An amazing achievement! Conceived as a construction experiment for TEN and then adapted into an engrossing level (some reviewer on another site seem to have missed this important fact in the readme file). The realism is really excellent and having lived within a stone's throw of it, the effort to make it so is to be congratulated. The gameplay is not too difficult, plentiful ammo for the regular enemies and exploration is more the order of the day. Secret polaroids are easy to find, apart from the final one which follows a nice double timed run. Lots of nice touches including the comments voiced by Lara, being able to slide down one of the tower "cables" from high up, multiple vehicle/boats to choose from and TEN features like the ability to suspend from angled ledges and sound improvements. All in all a lovely level and a great advert for the TEN engine. Good to have you back Gecko!" - Adrian (11-Mar-2023)
"This level takes Lara on a quest to get a birthday present for Winston (aww). I must say what an absolute beautiful level. It's quite simply stunning. I was blown away by the big open feeling of this level, amazing textures and crisp sound. While not being the hardest game puzzle and platform wise it still gives a huge pleasure while playing due to the beautifulness of the level as a whole. The author hasn't been shy to put a few funny bits here and there without taking all the seriousness out of the level. A must play if you ask me." - raksoen (11-Mar-2023)
"This level is made with the new TEN Engine and you can immediately see the upgrade on the graphics. Everything is so crisp and the lightning is amazing. The power of the new engine let's the view distance to be set very far, so it allows an outstanding scale of the level. The Tower Bridge is visually huge. The level itself is somewhat linear and requires some vertical traversing. The addition of different vehicles is a interesting choice. I've never thought of seeing together, in a classic Tomb Raider game, the quad bike, the jeep, the boats and the minecart. Though the setting of the level is the Tower Bridge, the level has some diversity in it: the subway station, the bridge itself, the museum/industrial building and the shopping district (which, by the way, is an amazing showcase of the new engine). I terms of gameplay, there are no hard puzzles (just some buttons to press). Secrets are easy to find. There is also a timed challenge. Enemies are placed in a balanced way, but so it's the loot, you have a lot of pick-ups. In conclusion it was a very good experience. PS: I love Lara's idle animation." - Deceneu (11-Mar-2023)
"A bridge to new era, and only the beginning. It moved me in almost every - across, sideways, vertically... Ofc the most I enjoyed a feature now fixed: illegal quad access, and I weep for the rest of fandom who will never experience it." - DJ Full (10-Mar-2023)
"The level itself is very beautiful, but it is an excess of form over substance. The gameplay is linear, despite the large but painfully empty spaces. Vehicles (jeep, pontoon) are added without sense, you can easily go through the game without them. A lot of enemies, for this reason you could put this level in the "shooter" category. Only one speedrun, no puzzles. On the plus side - a trolley ride in the museum. It looks more like a test level than a solid adventure. Honestly, I expected more from this builder." - Sylwia (10-Mar-2023)
"Excellent! Splendid! (in Lara’s words) Finally, a level that takes advantage of TEN, without it being too complicated or exaggerated in any way. Plenty of baddies that almost always leave goodies behind, lots of crows that go down with one shotgun shot, much exploring, some kind of London feel, vehicles (I didn’t use the rubber boat), interesting secrets, swimming (all those bubbles, excellent), one actually tough timed run I enjoyed, but could have done without, and oh, the mesmerizing Tower Bridge Experience ride, that was lovely. The entire level is huge and absolutely eye candy, with great care put on the settings and textures. Some details, such as the escalator actually moving lend it a really nice touch. Because I didn’t find each and every secret, I didn’t get to play that tiny mansion bit in the end. Definitely one you should play, even though I’m not saying everybody should start using TEN, because bad things may also come out of it, I’m sure. In this particular case, very highly recommended." - Jorge22 (10-Mar-2023)
"Geckokid, the famous builder who released a couple of levels in the past such as the beginning (demo) has came back to show off his Tower Bridge, and let me tell you: This is a very beautiful (a masterpiece in fact) level which took months to build and is also a lovely memory to eTux and Dhama (and his Tower Bridge attempt in 2001 with Vanilla TR4 engine). This level features the famous Tower Bridge located from London and every building (such as the bar) has been perfectly reflected like in real life Tower Bridge. The lighting and object usage is perfect, a lot of them were built with a 3D modelling program. This also shows what you can achieve with TEN engine. The usage of Lua and nodes was also very good, which was used to respawn the train indefinitely or move lara up and down through the escalator. I can assure you that you will enjoy this level immensely, you have different enemies backported from different TR games such as the dual revolver guy from TR2 opera level or the TRC VCI enemies which work without issues. The player has also the choice of using different water vehicles and on land vehicles. In conclusion thank you so much Gecko for your level and your immense support and effort with fixing rendering (providing your level to Monty to tune renderer) I am waiting of course for your next level :)" - Kubsy (10-Mar-2023)
