"This is a three level (although the first is mostly a short intro) Tomb Raider 2-based sunken ship theme. while most of the textures are the original ones, it recolours them, and has additions that make it feel like something new. There are also also lots of new and modified objects on top of the original ones, as well as new enemies that seem partially based on The Haunted Mansion level I played recently, but with even more extras. I felt the new enemies were a little lacking in sound effects, even if it sort of makes sense why. The lighting is good most of the time (especially in the last level), but I did feel it was a little flat sometimes, given how large the levels are. The ambient theme in level two did seem to have some sort of clipping issue at points, although the new/modified ambient themes do fit well. Everything comes together to make it feel new but still have plenty of classic elements; the final level in particular is one of the most impressive takes on "The Deck" theme out there.
After the intro level, the first main level is very complex, with a claustrophobic crashed ship design (although there are plenty of larger rooms too) that's quite non-linear as you have to find multiple objects throughout it. Each of the items you need is behind meaningful challenges and puzzles, and it keeps unravelling it's complex layout in interesting ways, and certain areas/interactions connect with abjacent areas in creative ways. While it can be easy to miss something with how huge the level is, there are generally unique objects and set-pieces signaling important areas, that provide a hint something is important, even if it's not immediately obvious. The last map is a giant "The Deck" style design with a central cave full of wreckage and various areas around that. Despite it's size it's a little more straightforward than the first level overall as there are only a few items you need to collect (even if getting to them is a pretty big adventure), and it makes great use of the space with the already large areas revealing new depths multiple times. As an undersea set there's quite a bit of swimming, and some of them are pretty long, although you're usually closer to an air-hole than it appears, even if it might be easy to miss them with how much there is. The main thing that can be an issue is the backtracking; there are generally multiple shortcuts and various paths open as you progress, but there are sections isolated enough and/or with multiple tasks where you can have to take a bit of a trip if you miss something. While there are plenty of traps, the exploration is the main focus here, along with some puzzles that require taking a look at the environment for clues. Combat is pretty incidental until the end where the final boss encounter is pretty nasty, but there's plenty of health and you can have quite a bit of ammo by that point too. While they are behind some nice tasks, it is unfortunate that the secrets don't provide any reward for finding all three in each level. Not for those who prefer more straightforward progression, but this is one of my favourite takes I've seen on the sunken ship theme, with it's very ambitious scale and design, as well as various original ideas." - Mman (18-Oct-2024)
"Having just recently conquered Sabatu's impressive TR2 epic, this is another high- quality TR2 adventure that has its fair share of challenges. The gameplay has some welcome variation, plus some challenging but not frustrating sequences involving platforming and inevitably a fair amount of swimming. In the third level however, the constant backtracking to and from the main cave area got annoying after a while. I considered dropping my gameplay score to an 8 for this reason, but I relented due to the thought put into the puzzles, particularly the pushblock sequences and the switch puzzle near the end. Enemies consist mainly of the denizens of the sea, and some gang members ingeniously retextured to look like spooky skeletons. Luckily enough weapons and ammo is provided for them not to be overwhelming. The construction is well up to standard, and while the lighting is dark in spots, the dark places are on the general path anyway so it's not a major problem. Recommended." - Ryan (10-Oct-2024)
"Without a doubt, a great work by this author, with a good architecture that consists of well-connected areas where you can always go back if you need to. The gameplay is quite chaotic at times, and in the third level I had to visit the same places and perform the same movements and tasks several times; not too pleasant for the player. The enemies are well designed, the secrets are not too difficult to find and there are enough weapons, ammunition, first aid kits and flares so that you don't have any problems throughout the adventure. The atmosphere is well done, as well as the lighting, but in my case the textures, although they are well applied, are very low resolution with pixelation, and many times they became transparent making the surface invisible with certain movements. Levels to enjoy if you like exploration and don't care much about backtracking." - Jose (08-Oct-2024)
"This is a very exploration-based custom game consisting of a one short intro level and two large and highly non-linear main levels. The challenge comes mostly from navigating the levels and memorizing each location and how to get there. I mostly enjoyed the exploration challenge even though you may need to do quite a bit of backtracking depending on which order to visit different areas. There is also a good amount of platforming and puzzles distributed throughout the game which helps to keep the gameplay varied and interesting. One thing which I found slightly annoying is the quantity of large underwater areas where you are constantly trying to find water surface without being able to explore at peace. Apart from this, the gaming experience was solid and I recommend the level for all players, especially for those who enjoy exploring big and non-linear levels." - Samu (28-Sep-2024)
"Notes
  • Play time is approximate due to me failing to keep the statistics for the second level.
Neutral
  • These large levels are non-linear, which gives a great sense of exploration but can also be overwhelming at times and lead to a lot of backtracking. One thing that could help is preventing the player from exiting certain routes before finding the required item.
  • Given the underwater setting, there are some stretches that will really test Lara's breath capacity. Be prepared to use a medpack or two as she swims certain routes.
Liked
  • There are several puzzles, which I enjoyed. Most of them will have Lara find a clue written somewhere, and then the solution is usually straightforward from there. This is on top of the more standard fare of pushblock and floor pad puzzles.
  • Combat involves skeletons coming to life to gang up on Lara, and they are packing heat. I found enough weapons + ammo to deal with these. A healthy amount of harpoon ammo is available to deal with the hostile marine life.
  • There is some impressive set design here, especially in the third level where Lara explores a large, shattered cross-section of a sea craft.

"Maybe the best submarine level. Complicated yet organized so you mostly know what you're missing and keep track. Two times I opened 80% of the map and couldn't find the last 20, so those moments could be clearer. Then after being ultra-realistic, it gave me a random puzzle I walked away from for 2 hours... And I do believe the South hint for the 18-valve puzzle is wrong. But even if stuck, the scenery invites to continue, and when I already made a step, it was mostly satisfying. I would apply more fade on draw distance, but you can do it from the options so leeeet's give a 10 for visuals. All along a demanding yet good level. Deeply recommended." - DJ Full (05-May-2024)
"Hands down to one of the best underwater levels. Denny has managed to create an awesome and atmospheric adventure in the depths of ocean. The game consists of three levels: one short intro and two long ones. It has everything in it: exploration, clever puzzles, fighting, traps, parkour, lots of swimming etc. This all makes up a very diverse and engaging gameplay. The second and third level as mentioned are very long and complex. There is a lot to do, a lot of going back and forth. It's easy to get lost (which obviously isn't a bad thing!). I personally love complex and big levels so this was a heaven to me. Though, the only complaint about the gameplay I have is the unclear hint to the valve wheel puzzle in the second level. It's confusing and should be in my opinion changed but it's of course up to the author. Design is briliant. High diversity of textures and objects , good work of ligthing, immersive and at times mysterious atmosphere. One thing I really love about this level is how everything is connected to one another and that there is a lot of foreshadowing. A very well thought out layout of the levels. All in all, Denny has made an outstanding job and I highly recommend this great level of Classic Trilogy Competition!" - BlackWolfTR (02-May-2024)
