Reviewer's comments
"I'm sorry, but no matter how technically brilliant they may be, TR2 levels are just not much fun to play because of their inherently crude and grainy graphics. Since the lowest rating in the reviews to date is a 9, I'm not going to throw a wet blanket here with my scores, but I continue to urge builders to ditch the TR1 and TR2 engines and concentrate their considerable talents on the more eye-pleasing formats. All of this being said, Dagger II is certainly an engaging raid that has been laid out with an expert's touch. Moreover, parts of it are quite difficult to master, even if you know what to do and what's coming next. José's masterful written walk was once again crucial to my continued progress through the game. The seven levels are somewhat connected but each has its own distinctive character and requires about an hour of playing time (except for the last one which features a couple of boss battles). Certainly a well-done effort, but I'm looking forward to playing the next TR4 custom level." - Phil (21-Mar-2025)
"A very solid, varied, and highly recommended level. The first three levels are particularly inspired and verge on perfection. The action is sublime, with a cinematic touch. The remaining levels are entertaining, though not as much as the first ones. I loved the ramp section in the final phase. The game has a demanding but never difficult challenge, and the settings are very beautiful; especially the emperor's tomb. It seemed like it was made with the TR4 engine. The duration is between 4 and 5 hours. Unfortunately, the music couldn't be heard due to some unknown error." - requiemsoul (08-Feb-2025)
"Another awesome game from Feder. A continuation of the famous "Hidden Dagger". There are 7 levels as a whole, each of them different from one another. Every level is unique and explores a different theme and some of them use custom textures not seen before in TR2. Probably the most original one is the casino level with all the slot machines and gambling games - I really liked that level. The gameplay is very classic-like with some fresh and interesting ideas. Lots of exploration, traps, keys, vehicle action, combat and some puzzles here and there. The design is phenomenal. Great use of textures, good ligting and awesome architecture. The only thing I disliked and was kinda annoying were the soundtracks which weren't one-shot. I don't remember if the one-shot option for triggers works in TR2, but even if not, the repeating of soundtracks can be omitted by using the boulder trick. Overall, an amazing TR2 level that I definitely recommend to anyone." - BlackWolfTR (23-Nov-2024)
"This is another TR2 set from Feder but it's a bit more experimental thematically, with plenty of familiar design but also some creative new ideas like a Casino. It all looks great, makes creative use of objects and high-quality lighting and texturing. My one visual issue is that I felt a few areas were a bit too monotone in lighting; while TR2 lighting is much more limited, I feel like shadow contrast could be used more in certain areas that are pretty uniformly bright as it is. Objects are used well too and sell the more original themes in the set.
Gameplay is excellent, as expected from Feder at this point, with large, but not overwhelming, levels of gradually growing complexity that interlink well, which provide a variety of challenges and give consistent hints on what to do next. There's quite a lot of combat, and several traps and more challenging platforming tasks, but there are plenty of supplies (especially if you find all the secrets in a couple of levels), and nothing too difficult. The only issue I came across was unfortunately a somewhat major one, as you can pull the lower of two stacked blocks early at one point which breaks progression, although this is at the start of a level at least. That bug is unfortunate because the execution was near-flawless outside of that. Also an improvement on the original Hidden Dagger in just about every way, and contrasting this with the already good original really shows Feder's growth from very good to one of the best modern custom level designers around." - Mman (07-Oct-2024)
"this is a absolutly TR2 masterpiece. hidden dagger 1 was great, but this is one of the best TR2s i played so far. 10/10" - Raider278 (03-Oct-2024)
"This is for sure among the best levels crafted with TR2 engine. Each of the seven levels in the game offer varied locations to explore with great level design and visuals. Gameplay is also very engaging and well-balanced including lots of non-linear exploration, platforming, traps, combat, timed runs, and smart puzzles involving boxes, switches, and flip maps. Although I wouldn’t say that the game is easy, I found none of the tasks particularly difficult either, meaning that the game should be a good choice for players who dislike really tough challenges. All in all, it is a great level set in all aspects." - Samu (25-Jul-2024)
"This time it was a long game, but very entertaining and enjoyable! I could never imagine I would play something of this quality. The most notable thing for me are the textures that make a very good combination with the atmosphere of the game, which has an excellent spatial design. I wonder what is Feder's secret to have achieved such a thing in such a short time (taking into account the release of his previous game). Talent, quality, efficiency. My favorite level: Dragon Casino, to choose one, but they are all spectacular. Simply thanks.." - raiderbunsch (24-Jul-2024)
"Excellent title ! With 7 levels it's a real long-term adventure with very varied environments, but not too long (6:30 here), just the right timing to me. Lots of baddies, lot of exploration, very well architectured as always, and with some good jokes and funny things :) (Lara climbing buildings in ball gown and high heels, the crazy sound of the machines in the casino, or the meeting with a good old friend in the first level...) I particularly liked the use of the music. There's plenty of TR themes accompanying the adventure and some are really well placed - I don't want to spoil but to me, at some point the music was a hint for finding one of the secrets, even if I don't know if it was on purpose or not ! Or in the first level when I thought "oh, too bad there's no interruptor to start Venice music like in the old TR2 manor" and just in the matter of seconds, this music appears just at the perfect moment ! You can feel that the builder put a lot of enjoyment and heart in imagining this level. I just encountered a bug with the crates at the beginning of Bartoli's Vault so I would advise to save often and not on the same slot. Apart from that one little thing it was pure joy ! I especially like the Las Vegas levels, and the last ones in and around the monastery (and the ghost monks !)... Oh well, I especially liked everything in fact. Thank you, Feder :)" - OrFractal (01-Jul-2024)
"Feder has mainly confined himself to the unofficial engines, but it's no always a pleasure to play one of his offerings as you'll always experience a high-quality raid. This is no exception. It's undoubtedly a challenging and lengthy raid, but never enters into realms of frustration. There's plenty of variation in the gameplay, the highlights being some interesting timed runs, traps and block puzzles and you really feel like you're exploring every inch of every large room (loved the hub room setup for the Four Diamonds in the Tomb of the Emperor). I also appreciated the pleasing sense of interconnectivity, as you often glimpse places you will either visit later on or return to from a different angle. Everything looks extremely pleasing throughout, and you get nice changes of sceneries too. Absolutely wonderful stuff from start to finish." - Ryan (28-Jun-2024)
"Let's not now discover the talent of Feder, one of the best author of custom levels of all times, and one of my best favorites. Once you start playing you can't put it down and it's like a drug: you always want more and more... The design and architecture are impressive, the lighting and texturing are perfect, there are enough pickups so you don't have to use the pistols after the first level, the enemies are very well placed and the secrets are not too difficult to find. Conclusion: a true gem of the custom levels worthy of occupying one of the first positions in the Hall of Fame. Congratulations Feder! And thank you very very much for offering us so many hours of fun. A big hug." - Jose (22-Jun-2024)
"Even after recently completing the Remastered I - III and replaying TR IV & V, this is a great set of enjoyable professional looking TR2 levels. Some nice innovations (esp Casino level) and puzzles. Varied gameplay. Enemies fair and plenty of pick-ups. TR2 engine does have some texture clipping issues and on my PC I had no music/voice audio (despite being able to play the individual files when looking in the music folder) - but these were not the level builder's fault I guess. I did have a slight quibble in the first couple of levels, but so much great stuff has happened in the 7 hours since that I've clean forgotten what it was! So it's 10s all round. Wonderful effort Feder!!" - Adrian (12-Jun-2024)
"As it's by Feder, I knew this would be amazing before I even booted it up. I wasn't disappointed. Perfect classic TR2 Gameplay, with a really nice level of challenge - It took me nearly eight hours of total playtime to get through this. The penultimate level is definitely up there as one of the best TR2 levels I have played, and I really liked the Casino level - a very unique setting. Please keep making TRLEs Feder!" - Passalaqua (09-Jun-2024)
"Solid plot, top notch gameplay and excellent æsthetics designed with remarkable spatial imagination. The feder it goes, the better it gets. It could be an official TR Gold if not more than this. Recommended for everybody." - DJ Full (13-May-2024)
