Reviewer's comments
"Chapter 5 of the builders retro series and just like all the others you get a straightforward 30 minute raid with 3 secrets to collect. It starts with shooting grates and dogs and I was briefly concerned it would just continue that way, but it does open up a bit and adds the use of the torch and pushing a few statues around. The mirror room with the knight was an interesting twist and the room where you use the switch several times was oddly strange but made the level more memorable than it maybe should be. I hope we will be done with this nostalgia trip now and the builder goes back to delivering the quality of some of his other excellent work again in the near future." - MichaelP (08-Jul-2024)
"Despite being uploaded recently, this is an old level of the builder and bears from time to time the mentality of older levels. It does have a decent amount of camera hints though. Nothing stands out and there are no puzzles but, from a player's standpoint, the environment is pleasant, there are no frustrating moments and it's fan to play. And this must be rewarded somehow. Recommended for a short, fan and non demanding raid." - billie2001 (01-Jul-2024)
"An earlier review says that this is an earlier Alphonse level. I don't know if that means last year or whenever Alphonse started building. If Alphone has been building for years and has suddenly decided to flood the market, so to speak, by releasing all of his work product at the same time, I would have to agree that this one represents one of his earliest efforts. It's quite brief and straightforward, no particular thought or skill is required, the enemies are limited in scope and number so that the pistols are quite enough for progression, and the ending is rather abrupt. Not what one would call a polished raid, but competently done and a nice appetizer for the nascent BtB competition." - Phil (01-Jul-2024)
"Nice short. A simple level with a bit of fresh custom objects and texture transitions forming a nice non-intrusive blend rooted in components we know already. I don't agree with some gameplay choices but the map is small so you will figure it out." - DJ Full (01-Jul-2024)
"BtB2024 is (quite literally) just around the corner, so I figured I'd squeeze in this review before everything gets released and my attention is directed elsewhere. It's pretty much in the same vein of Alphonse's other recent efforts: brief, charming and fairly enjoyable with nothing particularly challenging in gameplay terms. The town you explore is rather stark and brooding, but it does somewhat befit the ghostly atmosphere (helped by the City of the Dead audio). There's a nice little "elevator" puzzle at the end that spices things up slightly. Nothing memorable in the long run, but definitely a pleasant raid." - Ryan (30-Jun-2024)
"The experience fits the bill for the builder and their style. This specific level feels a little more fresh than the other ones, and actually offers some nice gameplay.
The GAMEPLAY for this level was quite enjoyable for how simple it was. Some use of the wraiths, burning floor and other whatnots make it a level that's chill and not frustrating at all.
The VISUALS of the level fit the general bill of what you might expect from the author. The texturing using both rome and egypt textures create a nice contrast. I saw a lot of stretched and messy textures though so it'd be nice to correct that in the future levels. The lighting also feels bland in all honesty, and a lot could be done to make the town feel even more dreadful- maybe the torch could have been used to create a nice atmosphere and allow for some more interesting puzzles.
Overall nothing outwardly fantastic but there is beauty in simplicity." - OblivionJaw (29-Jun-2024)
