Reviewer's comments
"A really solid debut! I personally liked the first and last level the most; the second level was a bit too long (as other reviewers mentioned), though there are clever ideas that make the level enjoyable to some degree.

Design wisely; the first and last levels really shine, while the second has a lot of wallpapered/mirrored textures, even though it might be an intentional idea that I still think some variation here and there would be nice. It simply takes away the good impression we had in the beginning but it could've been worse (I've seen much worse debuts than this)

I liked the idea of having few medipacks across the levels, which gives a feeling of anxiety and caution (even though the final fight might be a bit brutal, but it is not unfair by any means). With that being said, combat is very balanced, and we have plenty of resources to work with.

Nevertheless, it is a great debut! Looking forward to seeing another project from this author!" - Mahetus (02-Mar-2025)

Neutral

  • The ending is quite climatic, but I have mixed feelings about fighting the TR1 final boss three times in a row. It certainly tests Lara's arsenal, but it is a bit drawn out, maybe twice in a row would have sat better with me.

Liked

  • There are plenty of challenges presented in this game, including some rather tight timed runs and trap sequences. This adventure is not for the feint of heart, but I enjoyed myself.
  • There's also a variety of enemies, which get progressively more fierce as Lara enters the depths of hell. Medpacks can be scarce but she will have plenty of ammo for the majority of the adventure.
  • The visuals provide a nice variety of locales, from green valleys with waterfalls to hellish dungeons. Some areas felt a little wallpapered but overall it was a good job with the textures.

"For a maiden release (with the TR1 engine, no less), this is pretty impressive. It's also another unofficial release that tends towards a rather spooky setting. The dark, somewhat unsettling atmosphere is amazingly well done, with some amazing setpieces (particularly the floating islands section where there's nothing but certain death below you) and is aided by brilliantly spooky and slightly trippy audio files. Gameplay is sufficiently challenging throughout, but actually starts off somewhat serenely in the first level with a somewhat familiar environment (at least compared to what awaits you afterwards). The combat ramps up from level 2 onwards, as do the complexity of the puzzles and trap sequences. Some of the hub rooms take quite a bit of exploring too as you find the necessary artefacts. I did myself running a little low on medipacks during the final boss fight (although ammo was undoubtedly plentiful), so maybe a couple more sprinkled through the earlier levels wouldn't have hurt. It all ends with this breathtaking escape sequence that will require you to keep your cool and brush up on your jumping abilities. Amazing stuff, and not to be missed." - Ryan (01-Jan-2025)
"It's a real shame this release has been overlooked, hopefully a written walkthrough will bring more kids to the yard because this is just so darn good. It being a TR1 level, the use of more detailed textures makes such a strong impact and it just works. The Lost Artifact textures make such an unique setting in the first level, and then it takes a deep dive into a literal hell where you get lots of black and grey textures. It's heavy, it's oppressive, it's amazing. It seems daunting and overwhelming at times but I managed to finish it on a blind playthrough alone (did use trview to find the missing secrets on my second run so I could cover all of them in the walkthrough) so take it as a testament to good level design. The author provides a lot of firepower and perhaps not as many medipacks in the early levels, but make a conscious use of what you get because the final showdown will require a fair share of it. And then afterwards comes a lenghty escape sequence which had me mashing the quicksave/quickload keys like there was no tomorrow. Don't sleep any longer on it, please. 2h45min, 6 secrets. 12/24" - Treeble (29-Dec-2024)
"This is a three-level Tomb Raider 1 set clearly inspired by "Into the Realm of Eternal Darkness", as you start in a semi-normal setting (this time a Scottish textured landscape), and descend into hellish environments with semi black-and-white texturing. Despite the inspiration, it still feels like it's own set, with a style that feels distinct, as, rather than indifference, you are both taunted and seemingly assisted by an unknown entity as you go further into the realm. There's even a reference to one or two to things from the main games, to add more surrealism to the setting. I might be just imagining it but it also feels a little more colourful than it's inspiration, but not enough that it loses track of it's base theme. The lighting and texturing is great throughout, and manages variety despite both the theme and engine limitations. Another nice touch is the use of things like slowed down music to add to the uneasy atmosphere.
This is a pretty challenging set, although overall quite a bit easier than "Eternal Darkness," the first level is relatively calm, with mostly exploration (involving a Lost Valley type cog puzzle), light combat and only a few areas with traps. Things get much more intense from the second level, with more combat and far more traps and other obstacles, including some semi-linear trial type moments where you face various challenges, with a vague clue to their nature. The third level follows that, although with more combat over other elements, including a pretty nasty boss fight that does something surprising with a certain foe. It also ends with a nice climax and ending sequence (including a final FMV). You find plenty of ammo to deal with everything, especially with secrets, but medi-kits feel a little thin earlier, and I was surprised how low I got when the combat picked up, although the third level gets a bit more generous with them. Another excellent surreal horror themed set for TR1, and takes from it's clear inspiration while still feeling distinct; If you're worried by the length and challenge of "Eternal Darkness" I'd say this is a good way to build up to it, as it takes similar elements while being a lot shorter and somewhat less challenging and complex." - Mman (09-Nov-2024)
"Very good and with some nice moments, but sometimes it has too long of the same activity, which I would interrupt with something interesting. The second level is probably the most balanced but still drags a bit, while the first level is the most immersive. Overall I'd reduce filler parts by like 20%. If you like slow pace in well crafted environment, hop in." - DJ Full (31-Oct-2024)
