Reviewer's comments
"This is for sure one of the best if not the best TR1 levels that I have played. Gameplay has a great flow including a mixture of puzzles, platforming, traps, and combat, all of which offers enough challenge without being too difficult for most players. Needless to say, the level looks visually excellent involving a great use of both original TR textures and custom textures. I highly recommend this." - Samu (05-Sep-2025)
"Another TR1 offering that's somewhat on the difficult side, but also of a very high quality (as you'd expect from this established builder). The visuals are unique and stand out from the get-go, with some unique and striking textures and pretty impressive setpiece areas (such as the giant South American pyramid in the first level), plus the audio and music files really add to the atmosphere. The gameplay is on the challenging side and it certainly ramps up throughout, with a few surprisingly tricky sequences like the escape sequence that's on the way to the end of the game. There's a fair few rather challenging jumping exercises, plus some very well executed timed runs and a few puzzles to conquer. You certainly won't be bored! I also thought that the enemy quotient was spot on, as you get more than enough supplies and they're not too annoying to deal with. Maybe a couple of the lava rooms were a bit long- winded and a few of the falling ceilings a bit cheap, but that's as far as my gripes go. A memorable and very enjoyable raid." - Ryan (29-Aug-2025)
"How about a mixture of Lost Valley, Crash Site and Natla's Mines? Or a less dirty Cistern? Or even more epic Atlantis? And all that with references to other well-known levels? You get all of that here, with three fully distinctive levels. From exploration-driven valley, through a puzzlish tomb, to the combat/climbing showdown. It really has everything, with some unique ways to hide secrets to round everything up. Another proof that every engine can still work when the builder knows what they are doing. If it wasn't for the feeling that some areas were somewhat generically textured, it would be a perfect score. I was also hoping for the Torso boss, but that's just me. A must-play level." - Tolle87 (21-Aug-2025)
"Another fantastic level from Bradley, as always, with impeccable visuals and spot-on lighting, but I felt that some places were too dark for TR1 (remember that there are no flares in TR1) and sometimes I had to increase the screen brightness to see better. Anyway, there are points that really discouraged me in this project in terms of gameplay. Too much pushblock, yes, exactly that. Each new room had a push_block to pull, and that's really annoying. You can make creative puzzles without pulling blocks all the time. Right at the beginning of the third level, I already have to pull a block again, and another problem is that I didn't find any extra weapons. I stuck with the pistols until the end, and it was quite disappointing to find ammunition for the weapons but not find them. If you hid them in secrets, bad end for you because I have zero interest in looking for secrets. I just like to explore the map and have fun. Especially in level 2. Other than that, it's a good project, but it left something to be desired in terms of gameplay because of this factor. If it weren't for that, I would have enjoyed it more... I finished it in 4 hours and didn't find any secrets. Disclaimer: due to my lack of attention, I ended up losing weapons during the game. Thanks to the Twitch people who told me where they were." - PedroCroft_ (16-Aug-2025)
"The first two levels are my favorites, with varied challenges, clever puzzles, and immense, beautiful rooms. However, the third level felt tedious, especially the "flying Atlanteans' nest" section, which seemed repetitive, as if I had played it a thousand times. Despite this, the final tile puzzle was fascinating. The human enemies are formidable, with very clever evasion maneuvers. Although the action is intense, there are plenty of weapons and ammunition to face them. In short, it’s a highly recommended level for those who love the essence of the first Tomb Raider." - requiemsoul (10-Aug-2025)
"A three level Tomb Raider 1 set. Having just played through the author's previous release Another Bloody Christmas this is to the visual standard of that set, albeit within the limits of the TR1 engine. It's a Mexico theme and makes great use of various sets to convey that style; there's some quite varied texture sources used but it all fits together, the exterior jungle is also nicely colourful in quite a striking way. Object use is great, and there's a lot of edits and original additions to support things; I do feel TR1 is a bit of a millstone here, as certain enemies from later games seem like they would fit better, but it does the best it can within that limit. Lighting also manages plenty of variety within the TR1, and lots of room provide striking scenes as a result of that.
Each level here is quite long, and has plenty to do in each, there's even a minor route choice in the first level (although it only amounts to a couple of rooms, and one choice opens a secret so is the clearly better one). The first couple of levels are mostly built around hubs, with plenty of choice in which order to tackle the tasks, but the gameplay in the offshoots is focused enough to not get confusing. It isn't too tough to start with, and you get plenty of gear, but it does ramp up in difficulty as it goes, and some of the traps and platforming in the final level get quite tough. Save Crystals are also an option the set has design for to further add to the challenge, but I used the default setting without them. One tile puzzle in the final map would have stopped me if a walkthrough wasn't available on TRCustoms, as the general solution is clear, but the answer is mirrored for some reason, but that's the only progression issue I had.
A story is also integrated well, and makes use of things like the item examine option to add to it and develop your race against rival Adventurers; it even makes some nice use of the Pierre teleport for the main villain and creates a satisfying conclusion. Another addition to the excellent TR1 sets that have come out recently, and another classic from this author." - Mman (09-Aug-2025)
"Solid stuff. A fusion of grey Mexican, leafy Madhouse plus a little bit of tech. The first level has a blind choice between reward and punishment, flashbacks to Without A Paddle but luckily much briefer... At first I was hyped it's a Khmer thing but it handles the pyramid like I did it in mine, so in the end I even got a bit of that. The surroundings and the inside tho are totally different and they get more Mayan colors than we're used to while still nodding to the moments of TR1, Peruvian and not. Some advanced jumps are needed but this whole game also is, classic but distinct and so far the only one like it - plus not much chance to get stuck, so I'd recommend it to the pre-intermediate and above. If you're into TR1 engine it could even be one of the first levels you try. The ending got a bit heavy but note my 100% style - it's one of those levels more enjoyable casually than like that." - DJ Full (07-Aug-2025)
