Reviewer's comments
"As a debut level: no a bad homage to The Great Wall! As a demo level, I think the most useful thing to do as a reviewer is to point out places to improve. "Mountain Cliffs" follows the same storyline as The Great Wall (cave, run along the wall, dive into pools, endure monumental trap corridors, and reach the locked Xian gate). That's all here, but the scale is enormous: Lara runs miles through caves and vast stretches of the wall, making it feel slightly uncanny since its clearly not built at human size. This couples with some uneven and unpredictable geometry and frequently wallpapers, squashed and warped textures, and fairly flat lighting to make for a not very pleasing visual experience. The huge number of enemies (with a propensity to attack in 2s and 3s), the lack of camera signals for switches (and one broken camera), along with the drawn out trap sequences with little visual beauty or puzzles to break them up, mean that even at 45 minutes this level can feel grueling. Despite this, there are some clever traversal sections, well-placed music cues, and some of the traps pose a puzzle in themselves. For instance, the room with the rolling blades on two elevated platforms made for fun timing getting up and down to various doors. My favorite was an L-shaped hallway with two different rolling blades that Lara needs to plan carefully in order to move between safe side corridors. Some of the visuals could be improved with texture work: the giant cataract of waterfalls would look quite nice if the water were white or blue (like the color of the water itself) rather than the dingy Xian brown water. Walking behind the waterfall by the bright green moss looks nice already. There's also some nice vertical multi-platform design toward the end of the level, and in general platforming throughout was quite fun. Some last specific notes for improvement: 1) it's possible to get soft-locked in the water at the base of the giant waterfall, since it's not clear there's a sink and Lara looses her breath quite slowly, 2) more varied lighting, with fewer *pitch* black areas and more diffuse lights, would look nice, 3) the swinging blades could be lowered a click since right now they are too high to jump over but not high enough to run under, 4) add in more camera work and camera hints when switches are pulled. I found myself feeling nostalgic for TR2 playing this, and I hope to see more rom this builder in the future!" - Cbl (16-Jan-2026)
"This is a decent remake of TR2's "The Great Wall", although maybe what I don't like from this version are including, but not limited to, tedious backtracking (especially for the 1st secret), fiendishly hidden paths requiring careful eyes (especially for the 2nd secret, which I didn't get), and paths of no return (especially for the 3rd secret).
Nonetheless, the builder shows a decent potential with this demo, and hope the next levels (or even the complete remake) can be worth the wait." - Charles Kane (06-Jan-2026)
"I really enjoyed this 45-minute raid set in the good old Great Wall vibe settings, but with significantly adjusted architecture and gameplay. Progression is quite linear and obvious, but keeps you on your toes with tigers to kill and boulder, spike, and blade traps to maneuver around. There are three secrets to find and some fun platforming to do. It has a few too many dark corners in the second half and texturing and especially lighting could use a bit of work, but this is a promising demo release that is worth checking out, especially if you liked the original Great Wall level." - MichaelP (11-Dec-2025)
"This is Great Wall much expanded but with differences, so if you like it go for it. There are tougher places but mostly with a lot of margin given. It's way too big to stay as immersive as small levels do if no extra material variation and extra lighting is used - in space this big the standard lighting falloff doesn't reach far enough, and for the same reason it's hard to see ledges which blend with the background. Fortunately the progress is quite linear so you don't miss anything for long, and if you don't care about 100% you can only climb the Great Wall once by skipping pickups - minding the level is more challenging combatwise without all goodies taken. Auto pistols could fix this, but we pick up lots of bullets yet never the weapon, and yes I know it's a demo but it feels unresolved regardless so pickups should be balanced differently for it than for the full version. I think this demo will serve the builder's development rather than players, so hopefully the advice is taken and the full game is better." - DJ Full (11-Oct-2025)
"This isn't too bad for a short and challenging TR2 raid. It's action-packed from start to finish, with spikes (stationary or otherwise) and blades being the order of the day, plus what seemed like an inordinate amount of spiders and tigers to eliminate. The search for the three dragon secrets was also an enjoyable quest. Maybe the gameplay could have been more varied (although it is only meant to be a teaser) and the textures were a bit on the repetitive side along with a couple of overly dark corners, but overall a fairly decent raid." - Ryan (07-Oct-2025)
"It's been a minute since I've last flown solo, but I found this to be a fun if simplistic raid. It seems to follow the same beats as the original opening level from TR2, but it then grows into something much larger. Lots of traps too, not sure how I feel about the wall knives being that high up on the wall but I managed just fine, and I thought pickups were rather scarce — never noticed how big a treat the tigers can actually be when in greater numbers or when you don't have a safe place to shoot them from. Visually it's a bit flat and empty, but I guess that's what helped make it more nostalgic. 40 minutes, 2 secrets. 10/25" - Treeble (05-Oct-2025)
