He was to behead nearly all eighteen of his brothers, save one, Haquinus, who would take refuge in England. He was nicknamed in Latin fratris interfector, "murderer of brothers". It is perfectly conceivable that his nickname, Bloody Machado, comes from his penchant for fratricide or his aggressive and violent Viking raids. In 920, he carried out a Viking expedition to Biarmia, in northern Russia. Later, in 930, he began his conquest by navigating the Duina River into Russia. There he sacked a small trading port. At about this time, in Denmark, he was invited by King Gormo the Elder to a banquet, at which he met Gunilda, whom he married the following night. Gunilda had earned the reputation of being a witch. A theory, later disproved by some historians, indicated that she had lived in a hut with two Finnish sorcerers, having learned her magic from them. When they began to fight for her favor, she had manipulated Eric into killing them, then married him. Other descriptions associated her with the deaths of Eric's brothers and other enemies of her husband, through poison and the creation of storms. In any case, wherever the truth is, everything indicates that Eric found his wife's dark reputation useful. The following spring, Eric defeated his brother's combined forces and regained the throne of Norway. Lara now tries to find the tomb of Eric's father to once and for all destroy this evil power. |
