Reviewer's comments
"The readme says there are a lot of puzzles and traps in here, but the truth is there aren't a lot, only a blade trap and a mirror room with only 2 fire traps. Enemies are bulls that you can only avoid, bats, a red ninja at the big room with houses. Rooms are almost always blocky, but I liked the horizon showing icy mountains and the sound of lightning. There are some tedious long ladders and a monkeyswing, but the camera angle made it look less boring. Some objects have been retextured, which is a nice change. An easy and linear level." - alan (30-Apr-2018)
"This is actually an extremely straightforward level, involving some basic item finding tasks (the mirror room ever so slightly showed creativity) interspersed with some tediously long ladder climbs and monkeyswinging (the admittedly rather nifty camera angle showed that there was nothing more than certain death if Lara were to let go). There's also some bulls to evade (it's beyond me how they can survive in such cold and icy surroundings, maybe their armour protects them). The textures and lighting are also quite bland, but at least Lara didn't need to grope around in the dark. Once you reach a sparse outdoor area with a couple of huts surrounded by the end of the world, the level crashes to the desktop. Can't really find much in its favour." - Ryan (14-Feb-2018)
"Nothing special in this level where you only have to pull some levers to open doors. The only remarkable feature is the mirror room near the end. Very simple architecture with paper walls, floors and ceilings, flat texturization and lighting, a couple of flybys to create atmosphere and some enemies to shoot/avoid. Not good the unmarked climbable pillar too. Playable anyway." - Jose (12-Dec-2017)
"This is a major ladder climbing exercise. There's some basic exploration, a simple mirror room, a couple of guardian keys to find, some bulls to run away from and a few bats to shoot, but mainly it's all about the ladders. The scenery is nothing to rave about, but at least it's not a dark level so there's that in its favour, but, sadly, not much else." - Jay (08-Apr-2016)
"To conclude my reviews on Elpasodude's releases, how does this final attempt fare in comparison to his previous works? Well unfortunately, I'm afraid to say that the texturing is still incredibly repetitive throughout, enemies and objects feel considerably out-of-place for the type of setting utilized and the straightforward gameplay is an extreme lesson in monotony, with many empty samey areas outlasting their welcome quickly via unnecessarily drawn-out climbing bits. And while the lighting and general atmosphere is a bit of a step up from before(with a well-fitting horizon complimenting the background of the level), I still personally wouldn't recommend this to anyone, unless they're a fan of completely tedious and boring gameplay." - Ceamonks890 (27-Nov-2014)
"This is an oldie from the early trle years. It is a basic straightforward level with very limited game play. The rooms are big and simple and there is not much else to do than pickup some keys and pull a lever or two. I liked the use of the TR4 bulls Lara has to dodge a few times and also the mirror room was a nice touch. Since the level is very easy, it might be a good beginners level for someone starting to play the game. The textures looked clean, sterile and repetitive, but the lighting was pretty good in my opinion. Not a bad level at all and I think it could be recommended, unless you get bored easily. (Under 20 minutes, 0 secrets)" - Blue43 (24-May-2011)
"This feels a bit like a test level. Lara wears a nice blue outfit, then this was probably one of the first level to use bulls, there are few ideas with cameras and even a mirror room. But the gameplay is almost nonexistent (pick up key, open door right next to it and go on), the rooms are oversized to a ridiculous degree - game would be over in 5 minutes if you didn't need 5 minutes alone to climb one of those ladders -, the textures are wallpapered and the typical mistakes are all included, from paperthin walls to "end of the world". Let's call this a simple demo for arctic environments that would have needed more work." - Ruediger (21-Mar-2010)
"A discovery in northern Canada which is almost stress free , you just have to avoid a few bulls and are annoyed by a swarm of bats. There is a few levers , climbing , swimming, a long monkey swing , a few artefacts to place , and a mirror room near the end. The setting suffers from mistakes such as thin walls, but the lighting is pleasant and cameras enhance this relaxing little adventure. The best level from the author. 18 minutes" - eRIC (23-Jan-2009)
"This author found the perfect pretext in order to use Antarctic textures and Egyptian objects. However I find it odd that bulls can survive in such a place. The title screen offered the level a certain charm and the author really can create a horizon a sky and re-texture objects. The rooms are unusually big there are a few paper-thin walls you can see the black part of the horizon at a certain point there are a few texture errors and some of the textures are stretched (they are repetitive too) the firetraps and the bulls were easy to avoid. At least the author knew that a bull would only react if your one square away from it (the bull automatically has an AI guard even if the level builder doesn't put the object AI_guard anywhere in this level). On the other hand I liked the way the author would give a hint that would allow the player to find a key by lighting a certain area in a particular way." - Sakusha (02-Aug-2004)
"The level is rather short collecting a few artifacts without a lot of trouble for Lara. Rooms are way too huge and very empty except for a few bulls roaming around ;-) but not getting much into Lara's way. Textures were standard but not always cleanly applied. Not a lot of sound added. At the end you see something like a house well sort of half of it and then my PC froze :-(..." - Engelchen Lara (10-Nov-2003)
"All those (quite skillfully) re-modelled objects but wafer thin walls and huge featureless rooms everywhere. Nothing else whatsoever to say except that 1) the lighting is rather nice 2) if you say the name of this level in a sort of Cockney accent it sounds a bit like 'Arse Age' and 3) an anagram of Elpasodude is Sod up a leed." - Orbit Dream (29-Aug-2003)
"Not much to see here and not much to do. Some guardian keys a vraeus and bulls they never got close enough to Lara as it's very easy to avoid them especially the one at the start you can just pass from the sides and the bull won't move. After that it's all levers and swimming not to mention the long climbs and even longer monkey swing. As the title says there is ice everywhere and monotonous textures. The rooms are all empty and except the bulls there were no enemies so I never got to use the Uzi. It's a very interesting level." - Kristina (25-Aug-2003)
"Another quick adventure for Lara. In this one she only has to escape from the Ice Age by what I understood and to do this she will have to find guardian keys and push a few levers. Also Lara is wearing an outfit I never saw before and I liked it. Also all the objects are retextured (the medipacks are strange the load/save icons are strange the ammo is strange...) and a few objects were misplaced (like the bat turning into a big medipack) but for me this level was fun. There are a few huge and empty rooms but it was so quick (15 minutes) that you didn't have time to think about these things..." - Treeble (21-Dec-2002)
"If you're not looking for a lot of hard puzzles and want a short easy level you should really enjoy this one. The author has added some nice features such as a new title flyby and a new loading screen Lara has a great new outfit some of the icons are retextured and I liked the icy textures used the new horizon the good light effects and the camera work. This was the first time I've been in a room with two bulls at the same time and it was very unnerving even though they are fairly slow. Some of the rooms were a little boxy and bland but some rooms were impressive to me - I liked the lake with the floating chunks of ice and the room with the mirror effect - it looked neat even though it was easy. All this needs is some good puzzles and it will be a great level." - RaiderGirl (24-Jul-2002)
"Lara has been to the cold climates of Antarctica and now this time she has ventured into the icy wastelands of Canada where there aren't any moose to be found but there are a few very angry bulls that must have taken a wrong turn at Montana to end up here. This level took me 20 minutes to play and although it wasn't overly wonderful there were some nice touches such as a new outfit retextured inventory items and levers some tricky fixed camera angles and a mirror puzzle which you need to use the updated binoculars with by the way if you go up close to the mirror and use them you can see Lara in the reflection but she isn't using the binoculars....hmmm very strange. So if it's a little humid where you're living then play this and I'm sure it will cool you down some." - Sash (21-Jun-2002)
"Sash and BRM have said it all. This very linear 20 minutes level virtually without any puzzle and only three relatively easy to avoid bulls (sphinxes) as enemies only impresses through its modifications of objects horizon graphics Lara's outfit and maybe a few cute camera angles. If you are interested in that go have a quick look." - Michael (21-Jun-2002)
"This 20 minutes level whilst not offering a host of challenges was sure fun. The author has retextured the switches the med packs and Lara has a bright new outfit. You must avoid three of those noxious bulls whilst climbing some of the highest ladders ever encountered. I loved the long long ceiling ladder with the camera angle from undernaeth Lara and shortly thereafter the memorable 'Battle of the Bats' LOL. This is pure enjoyment. Download it for a bit of fun." - Torry (21-Jun-2002)
"*squish* Oh no squashed again by some snorting bulls! Despite those rather angry beasts this level isn't too bad. Elpasodude has taken time to re-texture most of the objects including the medi-packs and save icons! The level though probably took less time to do. The rooms are very bare and massive! There are a lot of cameras here many are quite annoying but some are placed well. As you go through the level there is no real objective as it is very linear and the puzzles are very basic. On the other hand though it is not fatally boring and the water looks like it will freeze you to death!" - TrueRaider (21-Jun-2002)
"First bull I saw give me fright as I don't like to play with them. But he just sat there panting or whatever bulls do. The second pair I met were not that friendly but also not that hard to avoid and that does say something coming from me. A very very linear level. Lots of swimming and too much climbing. Some camera angles where great and some of them annoying. Apart from the bulls you have a flock of bats but just shoot hem they hardly nibble. You will even find the uzis but for what? Probably the ninja that you will meet if you stay at the right of the big house. I agree with BRM too much time spent on textures and other features some of them I really liked but that doesn't improve the gameplay. 29-04-2002" - Gerty (21-Jun-2002)
"Besides the re-textured objects this level doesn't hold anything new. A few annoying cameras three bulls and a couple of bats. Oh two more things: Was the deep pit that you have to monkey-swing over meant to be explorable? I didn't find any way up. And did anyone else find the ninja that appears out of thin air in the last 'room'?" - Magnus (21-Jun-2002)
"The author of this level obviously spent quite a bit of time on other features (new clothing horizon graphics re-textured guns/medipacks) rather than building the level. These features are interesting but I felt the builder had left out the most important aspect of level play. Unfortunately this level needs more work. Too few enemies stretched and overused textures rooms that were way over-proportioned against Lara thin walls and some very annoying fixed cameras. [One quick suggestion from me (and this goes for ALL level builders): Less is more! Rooms that are big and overwhelming may seem great in the Level Editor but once in the game they seem clumsy and amateur.] This level seems to be more of a showcase of what Elpasodude is able to do in the aspect of unique and otherwise non-gameplay features of TR rather than an Ice Adventure. Hopefully he will learn from this level and give us one that is worthy of a 8-10/10 :) If you want to see some interesting and different re-textured objects and horizon graphics you should download this level. Unfortunately that's all I can recommend it for." - Bullet Ridden Monkey (21-Jun-2002)
"The question is not whether this is a good or a bad level; the question is rather whether it is a level at all. I take the liberty of answering in the negative for reasons stated before by others and adding only that if you thought 'Climbing' were a title more appropriate for Surekill's 'Roaming' you haven't seen this one. The flaws in this level if considered as such are innumerable and very basic at that. However while lighting and whatever atmosphere (not to mention gameplay) are quite definitely non-existent the author obviously has a penchant for camerawork: The modified title even if it shows nothing worth the trouble of creating it and some of the in-game cameras even though others have obviously been placed to annoy the player show a certain potential on the author's part. The lonely stargate and the swarm of bats are placed well; the displaced ninja at the end while trying to kill Lara pushed her onto the finish trigger. :) The retexturing of some objects cannot be said to be wholly successful but I liked a small detail: the profile on Lara's boots. Should the author wish to continue level editing I'd advise him to team up and take on responsibility for camerawork and (perhaps) object modification; but the other members of the team should strangle him as soon as tries to lay his hands on either textures or room geometry." - Mulf (21-Jun-2002)
"The author informs us in the story that many puzzles and traps await the bold raider who is quick enough to avoid the sphinxes (disguised as bulls) that guard the ice palace. Well I have to say I must have missed them (puzzles and traps that is not the bulls). Maybe they have redesigned the place in the last millennium cause the maintenance for all those traps and puzzles proved to be too much bother and the people in charge decided to put in many sturdy ladders that won't disintegrate for the next 10000 years yet their deterring effect on the nosy explorer is virtually the same as all those deadly traps and tricky puzzles. So you climb your way from boxy room to boxy room with the occasional swim in between. The biggest thrill comes right at the start when you have to pick up the golden sphinx while a bull is stomping happily around you. There is another good moment when you get a nice camera angle from far below while doing a long monkeyswing across a huge and empty room but otherwise the gameplay is restricted to push some levers that open nearby doors. At the end you get a mirror room and if Lara takes the time to admire herself in the mirror she can see a couple of fires that indicate deadly tiles in the room itself. Fortunately if you make a beeline from the entrance to the spot where you have to place the guardian key you won't step on those unhealthy squares anyway. The texturing is very basic and monotonous thus giving the place a fairly amateurish and charmless vibe with not much of an atmosphere." - Dimpfelmoser (21-Jun-2002)
"This was a very short very simple but still enjoyable level. A little thin on the textures at times and quite linear but some decent camera work. Lara must find her way through the desolate Canadian tundra home. On her journey she must deal with 2 nasty bulls and a horde of bats. Very good for a beginner." - Momster (21-Jun-2002)
