Reviewer's comments
"Similar in many respects to the builder’s debut (Abandoned Village) in that it’s also a very short level that plays out in tiny map consisting of mostly small, nondescript rooms; again built with the City wad, but now taking place in a VCI environment. The main difference, however, is that this time there’s a more to do, the level is fast-paced, and the enemy factor is greatly enhanced. Not only are there more enemies, but crucially, their placement is much improved. The SAS are reinforced by a couple of dogs (so it’s Newcity rather than City proper), and by two bats who attack the very moment you grab a pickup, well done. There’s also a burner run. This task comes perhaps too early in the game, and it entails the waste of the only secret—a sane player would try to find a way to turn off the flames first, and the secret, which is obvious anyway, is the only way to go. When you do engage, though, a well-suited audio cue leaves no doubt that you’re doing the thing you’re supposed to do.
Texturing is as competent as in the builder’s previous level, though there are a few places where she got sloppy (for some reason, the bathroom stalls are particularly prone to distorted and squashed textures). With the exception of one room graced with a white lightbulb, lighting is still limited to ambience, but it’s not as dim as in the debut and thus acceptable.
Although it currently scores slightly lower than its predecessor, this level actually plays a lot better. The finish trigger comes, again, unexpectedly early, but this time the abrupt ending lends the level the character, not of a certificate of competence as in the debut, but of a demo that leaves you looking forward to playing the full level." - Mulf (10-Mar-2022)
"To be very honest, this game had nothing to offer to the player. Some running, jumping around, enjoying the tortured Lara in flames, 10 minutes of gameplay, some bad placed textures and... . Not recommended. Thanks!" - Mehrbod (06-Jul-2019)
"This one again is quite attractive to look at, but the 8 minutes (in my case) duration doesn't offer enough to get your teeth into it. There's a few guards and a dog to deal with, some crawling, a brief climbing exercise and a rather annoying "burning Lara" sequence (you'll have more than enough medipacks by then though). It also ends rather abruptly with Lara on a monkeyswing." - Ryan (01-Jun-2018)
"Very short VCI type level. Enemies were SAS, bats and silent dogs. I liked the traps corridor but it was quite short too. I finished the level with a key in my inventory." - alan (07-Oct-2017)
"Pretty much your standard shooter level within a VCI styled setting, involving a lot of door kicking, crawlspaces and a few figurative leaps of faith where you have to get through active flames, in the hopes of reaching the other side alive. Texturing and lighting are handled in a decent fashion, enemy choices(while fairly token), get the job done and the atmosphere fits about as well as it can for the time. Not really something I'd consider going back to though, in retrospect." - Ceamonks890 (29-Jun-2015)
"Very short level (ten minutes) with a rather abrupt ending. Having a VCI setting does make a nice change in a level of this age and it's not badly done, but the crowbar doors look jarringly out of place. Not much to do really, apart from shooting soldiers and some dogs and bats. Bats? Oh, OK!" - Jay (06-May-2015)
"Small rooms, short corridors and crawlspaces, I only advanced shooting some soldiers and a dog. On my way I also picked up a couple of medipacks and the crowbar. The only situation which made me think was the corridor with fires. I left some closed grates behind. In the pool near the end I found a small key but I never saw where to use it. The best, the texturization." - Jose (26-Apr-2015)
"This simple VCI style level has basic and easy game play where Lara goes from room to room, kicks open a few doors and explores crawl spaces after shooting barricades. There are some guards who shoot through closed doors at Lara while she is trying to pry those doors open with the crowbar. Also, brown dogs attack her while in a crawl space, so the enemy placement was a bit strange in this short raid. Texturing and atmosphere is typical VCI style with a bit of a dark and dull lighting, but not bad at all A quick easy level for in between. OK to play, if you don't expect too much. (12 min, 1 secret found)" - Blue43 (23-Oct-2011)
"It is a pity, that this level in the VCI-Style already after about 10 minutes finished is. I would like to have played even further. There were a few nice exchanges of fire with SAS-Soldiers and the rooms looked quite good. The lighting could have been a little bit better and the run through the fire had not necessarily to be. And the dogs had no sound. Otherwise Lara Severi has made everything right. Who therefore looks for a small but fine level for in between is exactly right here." - Scottie (13-Feb-2010)
"At about 10 minutes , this is a very short and straightforward raid in VCI style rooms and corridors. If the texturing is rather good, the lighting is dull. There is not a lot to do apart from progressing , the enemies are well placed in general. A raid that is technically solidly built but too short to make any sense, even the ending is quite abrupt." - eRIC (12-Jan-2009)
"A very short level that seems to follow the pattern of 'shoot enemy, climb ladder, go through crawlspace' for most of the level. It soon gets tiring, and I was wanting more. Some of the rooms looked quite nice, and the textures were well applied, but the lighting was occasionally a little too dark. This is not an essential play, but can be 10 minutes worth of fun if you have nothing else to do." - Spike (29-Jul-2007)
"Bizzarly incomplete adventure inside an office building with one good piece of 'dog placement' and some very poor texturisation. Nowt else." - Orbit Dream (01-Jan-2004)
"Sneaking through a high tech building again where every guard is keen on shooting at poor Lara. Nothing really new typical level neither better nor worse than others of that kind. One moment I loved though was the really exciting run across flames where you can drop into a pool of water at the last second literally - fortunately there is a big medipack waiting nearby." - Rüdiger (04-Nov-2003)
"A very short straight forward run through an office building killing SAS and dogs and exploring rooms a lot of them look like shower rooms but I'm not sure there was a lot of water anyway. Some crawling a nice slide and monkeyswing. Two firetraps were the excitement of the level and you're done. Actually that monkeyswing was more than a trap Lara fell off as did another unfortunate lying dead in the fire." - CC (24-Aug-2003)
"This was over before I knew it. Enemies are SAS soldiers and dogs not that many but this is a short level. Finding only one secret which you need and the best was the firetrap. Textures and music added to the eerie atmosphere and what is with that monkey swing. Lara kept loosing her grip at a certain point. Had to use the fly cheat at that part. 09-03-2003" - Gerty (18-Mar-2003)
"A ten minutes level but nicely textured as always from the certain author but the lack of gameplay leaves no choice than to give low marks. A lot of SAS guards dogs and the Uzi is available. I got one secret the crowbar to pry two doors and one jump switch to open the final door and finish. There was a room with fires and water at the end that you needed to go through and get burned a little. I can't say it was an original idea as I have seen it a few times in custom levels although it might have been when the level was released." - Kristina (10-Dec-2002)
"If you liked the look of the V.C.I. levels in Chronicles then you will love the look of this level unfortunately after you get over the look of the place there really isn't anything to do except shoot a couple of guards and some bats (an unlikely enemy in a city building) there are minimal pick ups and a great pool/shower area which should have been made more use of not just as something to run through to get to the end which speaking about the end while replaying this level for the review it took me 10 minutes to beat it that says it all." - Sash (21-Jun-2002)
"Indeed a very short and linear level which I zoomed through in less than 10 minutes. The VCI textures are nicely applied and some of the lighting effect are good and make this level worth checking out. There are 5 SAS soldiers and 2 dogs to battle and a few doors to open but that's about it. I liked the run through the fires though." - Michael (21-Jun-2002)
"A 10 minutes level that is way too dark for my liking that will leave you wondering what exactly was the point? Run crawl kill and find the exit. Tha tha tha that's all folks." - Torry (21-Jun-2002)
"This is a simple straight forward level. Lara will find few enemies in this building. She will however find a lot of water to a level with this environment! There were no real puzzles but there was a trap that was cool with a run through the fire then refreshing water to Lara. The textures were taken from VCI levels and well applied. The time needed is around 15 minutes and I found one secret (that was not really hidden...)." - Treeble (21-Jun-2002)
"Short but very sweet! Not really that much to say about this apart from it is well textured and a fantastic shower/pool section. At the end I was craving for more! It could have been an excellent start to an even longer level but too short." - TrueRaider (21-Jun-2002)
"This is not a very large and challenging level quite linear. The author has tried to perform a 'High tech level' but she not had the right set of objects to do it. Some of the objects do not match the atmosphere. Personally I believe that if you do not have the correct set of object to complete a project the best choice is keep it in the drawer and let the time pass. The other option is find the correct tools to create your own set of objects I had spent more than 3 weeks of work to produce the set of objects for my 'High tech' levels. The present level has not too much difficulty and presents some interesting ideas."- Josep (21-Jun-2002)
"Though not a long level it was fun to return to the VCI building from Chronicles. Your only objective seems to be opening doors and shooting soldiers which is made even harder by the fact that you don't find the uzis till the level is almost over. Thank goodness there are just a few of them. I found only one secret - maybe I missed one with a better weapon. The textures and music were used well in developing a spooky atmosphere and it helped that most areas were just a little dark - not dark enough to need a flare though. I had a problem with the monkey swing at the end and had to use the fly cheat to get across the pit otherwise I fell in. Looked like some poor soldier had the same problem. My favorite parts were the run through the fires and the long slide near the end." - RaiderGirl (21-Jun-2002)
"Hm - there isn't much to say about this level. Lara is running and crawling through some rooms shooting a few dogs and a couple of guards. That's all. When you expect something more interesting to happen it's already over. I finished after 20 minutes." - Sheevah (21-Jun-2002)
"Since the first authors' level visually looked so nice I wanted to test this one too and I was not disappointed cause visually it really looks as good as the first one but then again this level is way too short I really was shocked when it ended so suddenly after the last monkey swing. If it would have been (a lot) longer and maybe harder this could've been an excellent level." - eTux (21-Jun-2002)
"This is very linear very easy and uhm.... very short. It seems that the author built this rather for herself than for the benefit of the player as the only aim here seems to be to provide a playground for some texture experiments. I liked the shower cubicles but otherwise there is nothing remarkable about this exercise. Open some doors kill a few SAS guards and then monkeyswing towards the finishing trigger. Only recommended if you have fallen behind in recent review count statistics and look for some easy way to boost your record." - Dimpfelmoser (21-Jun-2002)
