The year is 1999. A great many months have passed since Lara's adventures in the Aleutian Islands, facing off against the sinister A.V.A.L.A.N.C.H.E. organization, taking them, and their nefarious plans, down for good. With the Mask of Tornarsuk firmly secured in her vault, away from any and all of those who would wish to achieve evil with it, times have been peaceful indeed. But such peace is not to last...

One day, whilst relaxing and sipping away at some tea in her study, Lara comes across an intriguing article online - an information leak, really - detailing a weak yet mysterious amount of seismic activity present around Svalbard - particularly within the abandoned Soviet ghost town, Pyramiden. Mysterious, indeed, for as the author goes on to assert, the quakes do not appear to be of natural origin, but of supernatural origin...

To this, Lara raises an eyebrow. It was theorized, as the author goes on to explain, that a select ancient norse peoples had managed to travel all the way up to modern day Pyramiden, hundreds of years ago. Up until recently, little evidence had been found, but the author explains that nearly all had been lost to the elements. That, in fact, the abandoned mining city had been built over the remants of a once great civilization, now little but snow and ice - and that within lies the very gateway to Helheim itself. The recent mining activity on the surface disturbing something horrific within its depths...

Lara, admittedly, is taken aback. It seemed hard to believe... but regrettably does the evidence begin to pile up, her eyes widening upon viewing the logo on the bottom right corner of the article. The all too familiar, embroidered red "A" - none other than A.V.A.L.A.N.C.H.E. They were still around after all. Just above: the final details of their ultimate plan, infinitely more sinister than before. She frowned. A genuine, disheartened frown.

Wasting little more time, Lara hastily begins to gather supplies. A.V.A.L.A.N.C.H.E., detestable as they were, were not mere buffoons, or so it would seem. They were an intelligent, capable organization - and their plans now equally abhorrent. To awaken the ancient joetunn, Hraesvelgr - perturbed, vunerable, and ever more chaotic due to the Soviet mining - and unleash it upon the world. An ultimate weapon which they would control, with which they could acquire all the money and power they wanted. Lara's only hope: to defeat the creature, and A.V.A.L.A.N.C.H.E., before it was too late...

Sliding her pistols into her holsters and packing away her shotgun and trusty woolen jacket, Lara determinedly makes her way out of her manor, organizing for passage to the Arctic Ocean immediately. Not all adventures, she thought with disdain, are embarked upon for sport. But because shallow people wish to do shallow things...

And Lara, as always, would be there to put evil back in its place.
