During an off period in her Adventures, Lara Croft was contacted by a private excavation company operating in the Aegean Sea. The company had established a rig station above a cluster of submerged Greek ruins, using it as a base to reach ancient ruins that were underwater or buried beneath unstable rock. Lara accepted the contract to act as a mercenary to defend the crew just in case, partly out of curiosity and partly because the operation sounded poorly managed, which probably meant that they needed experienced mercs just in case. One of the company's contractors, more interested in profit than procedure, ignored several background checks and somehow allowed Lara to bring her pistols aboard without proper checks, for one example, which was actively illegal in the company's guidelines. By the time she arrived, the rig was already active, staffed by workers, engineers, divers, and a small number of hired security personnel keeping the station running through rotating shifts. Her work at first was loose and uneventful, even boring at times. She helped the crew with small problems, assisted with surveys, checked unstable areas, and waited for permission to explore the nearby ruins. Most of the temples had already been mapped or stripped of anything valuable, leaving little more than broken statues, flooded chambers, and records too damaged to translate properly. That changed when HQ issued a station-wide broadcast. A newly decoded set of ancient Greek texts suggested that one of the unexplored temples near the rig may have been built to conceal Pandora's Box. The coordinates were incomplete, but close enough to the station that an immediate investigation was ordered before the site could be lost, looted, or claimed by someone else. Two mercenaries were available for the assignment. Lara volunteered before the second could be chosen, partly because she doubted anyone else on the rig understood the danger of chasing a myth like that. Armed and prepared, she set out to discover whether Pandora's Box was truly hidden beneath the Aegean Sea. Before she left, the other mercenary warned her about Solaris, a hostile military faction seen excavating other temples in the region. Solaris had been interfering with the company's operations for weeks, stealing artifacts and destroying anything they could not take. Their stated goal was to break the control of corrupt governments and corporations, but their methods suggested something far more ruthless. If Pandora's Box was real, they would not allow Lara's employers to claim it first. |
