Reviewer's comments
"I had to look up a short level to fit into today's routine, and this came up. The reviews weren't particularly shining, and converting the tom file (because I'm old fashioned like that, yes, but also because I need to give a reason for my personal archives to even exist) revealed it's a short level with just 26 rooms. How bad could it be, right? Also, catacomb, yay... Standard scripts crash to desktop, so I ended up having to download the ready to play file anyway as I couldn't be bothered doing scripting for someone else's level at this ungodly hour. The only real highlight here is the invisible bridge surrounded by dart traps. Everything else is questionable at best, so many enemies on screen that the engine can't even handle them, oversized rooms (including two very tall drops) and everyone's favorite, a pitch black maze. DJ Full's walkthrough got me through it rather quickly though, and I couldn't be bothered to mop up the remaining collectibles. Ah, yes, no finish trigger either apparently. 15 minutes. 12/21" - Treeble (05-Dec-2021)
"Even with the help from the walkthrough, I was forced to prematurely abandone this nasty level. Once you shoot all the skeletons and go back to the open door, what to do if you can't see anything even with flare in hand? I was running over a sort of invisible bridge (your death if you run off to the very end or to the sides is obvious) but I'm not willing to waste several hours exploring a black screen and always trying to find the right way to find the damned pool DJ was talking about in the walkthrough. Sorry Maciej, but this time your effort was not well taken advantage of. Totally unplayable." - Jose (24-Jan-2018)
"I had actually played a bit of this a few months ago, but stopped halfway through. I decided to brave it and play it all of the way through. Okay, the skeleton shooting sequence was somewhat fun (although Lara bending down to pick up a ridiculous amount of shotgun ammo, made me a bit nauseous) and the high falls were somewhat nice too. Everything else is a mess. The pitch black lighting, repetitive texturing, the skeleton labyrinth was boring, the earthquake got on my nerves and there is no proper finish trigger. I would leave it alone if I were you." - Ryan (03-Sep-2016)
"Outside of a few novel opportunities to gun down skeletons in a fashion not too dissimilar to your standard shooting gallery, every other aspect about this release is badly-designed up the wazoo. So best to give it a skip." - Ceamonks890 (28-Jun-2015)
"This is one of those lowest rated levels I'd put off playing for years due to its adverse reviews;but it seemed time to bite the bullet,in the hope that perhaps it wasn't quite so bad as other players had perceived it to be.In some ways, this was conceivably true;as I found the two impossibly high falls into small squares of water, and the alliterative 'skeleton sniper shooting sequence',to be a lot of fun.Nothing else could be described as positive, though. The texturing is simplistic;the lighting is generally pitch black;the booby traps are daft;the maze is utterly tedious;and there's no Finish Trigger. It's all very silly, and ultimately pointless." - Orbit Dream (03-Nov-2014)
"There are two kinds of really bad levels that deserve to be ranked on the lowest end of the list - on the one side the one-room example with nothing to do, Lara in a Box being the undoubtedly best example for this kind of level, on the other side the longer level that stand out for their incredibly insufferable gameplay and/or looks, and I think that this level could easily be voted as a landmark for those games. Gameplay in this level is as linear as it can get, as except for one of the most annoying mazes it's not needed to use left or right buttons (I tried). Of course there are dozens of skeletons and a few mummies to dodge or shoot, but you can easily ignore those as there are simply too many (and maybe except from the start, their placement was not original in any way). Of course this level is set in deep darkness, but apart from this, any kind of atmosphere in this level (along non-existent sound and camera usage) gets destroyed by numerous missing textures and the ability to look through some walls to see other rooms behind them. Though my scores are substantially below average, I think they still could be even lower but I decided to give a point each to both the skeletons at the start and, say, two half rooms being decently textured. 15 minutes, no secrets, no end trigger, no fun. Not recommended at all. (watch out - spoiler! ;))" - manarch2 (15-May-2013)
"What's the point in describing a game such warning way? To scare off players? To make them prejudiced before they see a level? Man, whoever you are, don't do that. The description of your level made me worried so I waited for several minutes to calm down, for not to take ANY prejudices when playing and reviewing. Now, when those minutes have already passed, I must say: it didn't help at all, as my first impression was: Noooo!! load screen. As the game crashed, I knew it will be a painful playing, especially when writing a walkthru, what REQUIRES performing some extra deaths to check out all the possibilities. So I waited several more minutes to calm down and restarted the game. From this moment, the game went downhill - picking up 90 shells, and then, the invisible bridge covered in total darkness prepared me for potential helpless dying in search for the right path. And soon, "potential" has become "actual". This state was stable for several minutes - to save some seconds, everytime I couldn't grab anything I was hitting Alt+F4 before Lara fell to the very bottom and this was the reason why I lost more time than I wanted to save. This sentence above can make no sense unless you found the way out of this place, so you know what I mean. Anyway, there are lots of extremely long things in this game - an absurdally long underwater corridor, unexpectedly long resurfacing having nothing to the physics rule stating the water depth is equal in two connected tanks, then another place when you need to pick up lots of revolver ammo from a cage (being the only one good looking thing in this game), concluded by what? Yes! Assuming all this ammo is useless, because you can't snipe off the following skeletons' heads, as there is too many of them, so they emerge and disappear, so you can't target them. I assumed at once that shooting the skellys into the pit is much better idea than following the intended way. At least if you shoot good enough for not to run out of shells. The next part of the game is a bridge across the lava, so it doesn't look so bad and we go ahead, killing some more skellys. And then, we find some flares, extremely useful, as there is apparently no flare usage bug in this game, unlike in most of dark games I've recently played. This is why I won't give 0 for the lighting, as we CAN see something. Nevertheless, the following maze is TOO long, with your flares going out while the enemies chase you through the corridors. And when you finally find the ladder letting you out of this mad rush, it appears you can't climb it yet if you wanna collected the remaining pickups, scattered on the alternative way through the maze. So if you wanna get those goodies, you need to go through the labyrinth 1,5 times. Bad design. Awful design, being honest. After exiting the maze at last, it's not the end yet. Oh, and there is also something resembling a golden skull lying on the floor, what you may try to collect, but after taking a closer look you can realize it's a sleeping wraith waiting for activation. "No" - you think, predicting there is no cross to destroy it. And you are right. The last part of this level is a nightmare. No anti-wraith, hordes of mummies emerging from the darkness, moving the pillars there is no need to move at all, constant earthquake effect preventing you from hearing the approaching rolling balls, and - among all of this madness - you, trying to jump over the gaps in search of the actually non-existing items, when it's nearly sure you gonna die, die, DIE, DIEEE!!! And don't forget there is no load screen here. For the epic ending of the game, awaiting you just behind this area: if, despite of all the obstacles, you struggle to the exit, defeating all the killable opponents on your way, and survive the safety fall into the final pit, you realise you did it all only to witness your fight for life being wasted, as there's no way out and your only fate is to be eaten by the wraith, in complete defencelessness. So much for pathos. SUMMARY: The biggest "NO" since... I don't remember for how long ago. The worst level I played this month, I'm sure about it. The only two projects I can compare this thing to are "Castle Cain - In the Dark" and "Dungeons of Lana Gol", as this mess looks like a mix of them both. I have no single sign of an idea why this level is rated so high. I also don't know how it happened the walkthru on it took me 4 hours. Neither how it is possible the review appears to be longer than the walkie. Isn't there nothing to write about in this level??? I wish I could use some vulgarisms now, but I can't do it, so I'm only gonna write something in Morse Code for some of You to get interested and translate this if all these arguments I've already written didn't convince you not to play this game: -. --- - / .-. . -.-. --- -- -- . -. -.. . -.. / .- - / .- .-.. .-... BTW, don't count the last dot, as it's the end of the sentence." - DJ Full (12-Nov-2010)
"Help! Help! I can't see anything. Is there in this level a hidden light switch about which I know nothing? How should one actually find the way about this darkness? One trips through the area, sees ugly rooms, ugly textures and must fight against vast amounts of opponents. In addition comes a superfluous labyrinth in which one sees nothing at all and one can also gather nothing because there skeletons walk around and one has no explosive ammunition. Sometime I have happily found the exit, have climbed upwards and suddenly there was an earthquake. And again an army of skeletons and mummies appeared. Then one can still go on a small distance and then is likely at the level end. It does not go on, in any case, and there is also no Finishtrigger. And there is a crash on the desktop if one wants to load a savegame. Why on earth have I played this level? It was only a waste of time." - Scottie (13-Feb-2010)
"It feels as a spooky & dark level at the very starting as soon as you reach the 1st lever a swarm of skeleton jumps towards you from ledge to ledge; I liked shooting them down with shotgun. Some things I didn't like in this level were that there are large falls downward with nothing in sight & suddenly you see that there is a pool below, a raider can be stuck like this at one place for many days. This level also consists of the worst part of TR ie there is a maze in this level. Overall the lighetinig & atmosphere is pretty good, though not plenty of gameplay & the objects used are also average. But just for the sake of seeing the 1st room which is built beautifully I had suggest you download this rather small level." - Anurag (08-Feb-2006)
"I haven't a clue what's going on here. It definitely looks different. Here we are standing on one of a number of blocky ledges high up in an enormous room very - almost pitch black. Run over these blocks and find a lever. Turn around and see numerous skeletons jumping and running over the blocks towards you. Now you can try this if you like I thought it was hilarious try to keep running back and forth over the blocks because every so often a skeleton jumps at a funny angle and falls off to the depths below. It took a while and that last one was a stinker but eventually he too lost his balance and fell off. OK now that bit of fun is over what do I do? Head for that door over the abyss? There's a further area like a maze long ladder climbs really long drops into water one a dive into a tiny hole way down there in the dark and a run along a slope with loads of mummys a few moveable pillars an earthquake and a ghost wraith chasing you. But where the end trigger is or what you're supposed to do at that stage I've no idea. I will say though that it's a pity there wasn't more time put into this level because it has the makings of something good if only the author knew where he was going with it." - CC (21-Oct-2004)
"Well this is a very annoying level. I had to reload it several times what's more I had to reset my computer too. The whole level is full of with numerous enemies skeletons mummies even a wraith in the end. There's no Final switch in the end so you must exit the game on your own. I didn't find any meaning of the column-pushing and I didn't managed to get up to the place from where the stones came down but there are numerous Grenade Gun ammo there. I think this level is a bit unfinished. The textures are everyday and there are no added sounds. This adventure is quite depressing. You can find a Hungarian walkthrough (as we don't have English version) savegames and pictures here: http://www.freeweb.hu/treditor/12/lara_croft_silent_hill1_2_3.htm " - Obig (12-Sep-2004)
"In my opinion this level is strange. A lot of skeletons mummies and Lara must fight them. The shotgun and the grenade launcher are useful to finish them off. People who like shooting enemies will love this level. The level is very short and it ends with a fall into the depth. This is a dead end no exit for Lara. Before the fall i found two columns which Lara can move. But nothing happened equal where I pulled them. There are switches to pull. I found no secrets. I don't recommend this level; it is not worth playing it. It is not difficult but it is boring. I found it annoying that the games crashes to desktop every time I wanted to load a savegame. It also crashed when Lara died." - Avmaster (23-May-2004)
"What an odd level. To begin with I thought I was never going to stop picking up shotgun ammo. Then I thought I was never going to stop using it to blow skeletons off ledges. I must say I rather enjoyed that bit. The major drawback to this level (apart from the fact that it's far too dark so use the level editor to give yourself unlimited flares - it's only self defense) is that there is no load screen so every time you die you end up on your desktop. I find that really annoying possibly because I do tend to die a lot. There are certainly some original ideas going on here but the whole thing could have been so much better handled." - Jay (07-May-2004)
"*Sigh* I tried and I tried but I have to give up and admit that even Sash is very generous with her ratings I really don't see how this deserves anymore than I gave it. Sure I found the idea of the many skeletons chasing Lara over the abyss hilarious even didn't mind the invisible ledge/walkway but the pitch black maze with the no loadscreen issue totally spoiled it to me even though the enigmatic jumps into the water almost did that too. Getting through the pitch black maze is ridiculous with only 1 flare pickup provided so I turned the sound down and went through the maze shooting like mad to get some light in this forsaken place. And after 15 minutes of gameplay when I thought I had finally found the exit since I found darts and more skeletons I was in for a big letdown as there were only some lousy good for nothing fraking uzi clips and a medipack - that's when I decided it wasn't worth it and dumped the level - from seeing what was there before I doubt I'm missing anything memorable or inspiring so here's the review - a fun start yet the rest ain't really worth it - give this a miss and better try the authors other level." - eTux (17-Mar-2004)
"I have to say that the other reviewers are being absolutely beyond kind with their reviews this was horrendous. The atrocities are too many to count but I'll name a few no load screen so desktop crashes when you die every move almost without fail gives the chance of death so you'll be crashing to the desktop pitch black the whole way through so you can't see every death coming and guess what here comes the desktop a confusing maze with skeletons and mummies everywhere that is shock horror gasp pitch black you didn't see that coming did ya and only one measly packet of flares given which I used all up without making any strides in it this lead to me allowing the skeletons to hack me to death which then brought me to the ever bright and at this stage beautiful desktop suffice to say I never found my way out of that maze and do not give a rat's derriere that I didn't. By the way you can also take my review and scores as being absolutely beyond kind!" - Sash (24-Jan-2004)
"If it were not for the totally unnecessary pitch black maze and the earthquake and the wraith at the (untriggered) end I could have rated this half hour raid quite a bit higher as I thought the ideas thrown in were quite hilarious. You get uncounted enemies to kill in scenarios that are set up just for that. Shooting plenty of skeletons off ledges with the shotgun then target skeleton head shooting with the revolver and finally blowing up mummies with the grenade gun. In between two breathtakingly deep drops into water and a bit of object pushing. Original level - worth a quick look if you're not afraid of the dark." - Michael (06-Jan-2004)
"So far I can understand Italian I used the revised wads with this level just to be on the save side. You start standing way above the ground floor (I hope) as it was very dark and the first thing you do is get all the shotgun ammo and shotgun as you will need it. Had to laugh as more than half the skeletons couldn't make the jump towards Lara and disappeared in the abyss. As there was nowhere to go I just took a leap of faith and it worked. At the end of that invisible walkway I took another leap and jeeeeeez that was a fall. My stomach turned (glad it was too dark as I do have fear of height). Problem with this game there is no loading screen so that means desktop heaven. Finding a revolver and sight and even later the crossbow and twice the Uzi and even later the grenade gun made me weary of meeting lots of enemies and yes there were quite a few. Skeletons and more skeletons and mummies aplenty. So far I haven't been able to activate the finishing trigger but I thought no loading screen no end trigger so when Lara couldn't go any further I called it a day. 09-12-2003" - Gerty (23-Dec-2003)
"This is the first time I played a level with too many skeletons and mummies and I mean that the lighting was dark there's also dark maze it's hard to find the way there and there is no end to this level Hmmmmmmm." - Yoav (10-Dec-2003)
"This level is pitch black something I always disliked. The flares are nowhere near enough for the confusing maze with the mummies and skeletons. It's based on catacombs with not much to do really; you are fighting many skeletons with just the shotgun but later on the grenade gun comes which in my opinion comes late. There is some climbing to do also Lara a couple of times needs to dive a long way down to reach a water hole. Unfortunately there is no loading screen and if you don't know how to fix this by messing with the script a little it will become very annoying since the traps are fire spike balls and many gaps in the dark. I came to an area with fires a wraith chasing Lara and some moving pillars but there was nothing to do there so I am assuming that was the end. A good start but definitely needs work." - Kristina (09-Dec-2003)
