Reviewer's comments
"another very good raid,i confess i liked the simplicity of this level in general, i have nothing to complain about this custom level if it wasn't for 1 reason, the lack of feeling of progress. when you play the beginning you are stuck in the same place for 15 minutes for the simple fact of an extremely hidden passage, and when you progress things seem like a straight line, lara thinks some things but doesn't help much, especially in the puzzles. One of the things I liked was the bar that makes lara catch fire and fill up when she stays too long near the lava. another thing I liked although I lacked a bit of practice was the puzzle of pulling the blocks. The idea would be to place the block on the correct pads but if lara pulls the block over the spikes she'll just die? if it was just to follow a path around it would be ok but I didn't understand lara's tip to place the block on the figures when it's a prepared path? another annoying thing was that when you get to the stone houses which are divided into 2 sections it looks like a labyrinth and ends up confusing you a lot. I also found the lighting weak at certain points and others are great, because it seems that there are only random lamps around and not a marked variation. apart from these problems it is a great game that is worth playing in your spare time these are just a few suggestions for the author to pay attention to just as your previous work was great. 2h10min 2 secrets....''" - PedroCroft_ (08-Feb-2025)
"Vilcabamba comes to mind, very isolating, you are alone and either doomed or surviving. Isn't it what we want? Not always, but you got it. Sometimes being dull but visually flawless, with contrast and colors I wouldn't change, so it redeems and endures a lot. I think it's currently underrated (not to the line of getting the podium but still substantially). A level to play somewhere in the middle of the pack, ideally between two long and grand ones." - DJ Full (01-Sep-2024)
"This is a great looking and very player friendly double level. Progression is very smooth and quite a few hints are given along the way and if you are ever stuck you can be sure that the solution is not far away. It is the first level I played that uses the voice samples and it really is a nice addition. Gameplay revolves quite a bit around finding your way around rooms with the help of cracks in the walls. There is a nice area with high temperature to manage and two timed runs that are not too tight. The secrets are fairly easy finds if you keep your eyes open and maybe the only thing that spoiled the experience a little for me was the ending, where after the actual boss battle you have to shoot your way out of there through a group of bad guys. It made sense storywise, but I would have prefered a more quiet exit at that stage. Recommended. (140 min, 5/5 secrets)" - MichaelP (01-Sep-2024)
"Lara’s off to explore another tomb that Howard Carter failed to discover. It’s official Tomb Raider canon that Howard Carter was bad at his job, as seen in The Times Exclusive Tomb Raider Level, where Lara explores some tunnels he had missed. If you haven’t played it, it’s worth checking out if only for the opening cutscene, where Lara’s really rude to the editor of The Times for no apparent reason. The actual level itself is only about ten minutes long and not that interesting, unfortunately. A Legacy from the Past is about eight times as long and a lot more interesting. Not eight times as interesting – that’d be ridiculous – but more interesting nonetheless. The goal is to finish two challenges which can be played in any order, which will then unlock a third challenge. They’re all okay, if nothing overly exciting. Having some rooms which Lara can only stay in a short time due to the heat is an interesting idea, but it’s mostly just stressful to try to figure out where to go before it’s too late. I liked the windy room, if only because it made good use of the space. I don’t understand the point in putting a breakable object on the wall if you’re just going to put the revolver and the laser sight on the floor right in front of it. Was that supposed to be a puzzle? In general, the level is pretty easy and Lara will often drop hints about what to do, which is rarely necessary. The third challenge initially looked like it would be fun – it has a tall central structures with paths leading off to rooms in all directions – but you pretty much just run from room to room pulling switches. After that, I thought I was getting near the end, but it turned out there was a whole second part and I had another forty minutes left. The nerve! The second part has Lara traverse a small abandoned village and another couple of temples. Visually, I think I liked the village the most, as I thought it captured the feeling of a place that had been abandoned for centuries. The temples are fine, but nothing special. Most rooms are fairly small, and you don’t really get a good sense of place. Although not overly dark, I did find the level a bit gloomy at times – something that’s especially annoying due to all of the unlit wall sconces and torches all over the place. For the first half of the level, you mostly fight bats and the occasional alligator, before facing some more challenging foes in the second half. For some reason, they’ve had their health increased exponentially, which just makes them less fun to fight. You do get more than enough ammunition to deal with them, but I would have preferred to fight more enemies over these bullet sponges. The level ended after around 80 minutes and Lara left one book richer. Howard Carter probably made the right decision sitting this one out, if only because he wasn’t quite as athletic as our dear Lara." - Magnus (31-Aug-2024)
"What I liked about the level: 1) TIP: You can avoid going through the underwater circular blades by heading to the left or right of the blade, pull out of the water, shoot the crocs then head to the north door, drop into the water to the left or right of the north door and pull the underwater switch to open the trap door above the ladder. 2) Another level set where I had to use Phil’s written walkthrough extensively (commandeering a windy bladed platform climb for example) but this is something I don’t mind at all. 3) Very cool to see the pushables drop into the room. 4) Very nice flybys to show what happens on some levers. 5) The heat sensitive areas with offsetting cooling areas was fun to navigate. What I disliked or could be improved: 1) Some levers don’t have camera shots to show what they do. 2) The clue for the pushpuzzle with the symbols wasn’t really sufficient to help complete the puzzle. 3) Not sure if this is a bug or not but the timed run that opened one door was still open after the time ran out and I was able to pull the jumpswitch without having to redo the run. 4) The 2nd timed run was difficult. 5) The on screen notes overlapped making them illegible at times. 6) The collision under the wooden column makes it less realistic. 6) Seems the enemies (Level 2) are harder to kill than normal. Conclusion: If you don’t mind using a walkthrough or like shooting enemies that attack en masse, then you will enjoy this level. Because of the complicated timed run, not suitable for beginners." - Lizard Queen (25-Aug-2024)
"Congratulations on providing fun for all BtB players! Thank you for this level. This adventure is very solid and fun at most aspects, without shining on any of them. Visually it is very cohesive, even if there could be more light and color variety in lighting at some moments. There are some camera hints which are missing, and many areas are similar looking. So, I experienced some confusion from time to time. The secrets were somewhat easy and plenty. The same goes for the enemies. Plenty from time to time, but easy to get rid off with the amounts of weapons and ammo. The most interesting puzzles ended up being confusing and sort of random (I solved one by sheer chance). The story is a bit impersonal to start with, but does the trick for its purpose. The underground housing seems incoherent, however provides classic TR vibes throughout. The raid is thoroughly enjoyable and recommended." - MigMarado (21-Aug-2024)
"This is two levels set in large cavern ruins, with the first part being the outskirts of the area, and the second being in a lost city. The locations look pretty great throughout, and there's a decent sense of scale and relatively bright (but still convincing) lighting despite the underground setting. Objects are also used well for the theme, and the setting creates a slightly different take on the houses and other village assets in this BTB set. There's also a nice spooky atmosphere established in a couple of areas later on.
While they have plenty going on the two levels here aren't especially long individually, and there's a decent flow with various challenges and exploration. While mostly sticking to general TR4 design, there are some extensions such as use of a temperature gauge and wind pushing you off ledges. It's not especially difficult, and the level is good about providing clues on where to go next, but there's a few tricky jumps and traps. Human enemies later on also have heavily boosted health; there's enough to deal with them fine, but the sponginess does make them a bit obnoxious. A solid entry with few issues, although it's not especially stand-out compared to the best of what I've played so far." - Mman (19-Aug-2024)
"I can’t always put my finger on what makes one level more enjoyable than another equally well made one, but whatever the cause I particularly enjoyed this one. It looks superb, the gameplay is an excellent mix of puzzles, diverse well placed enemies, interesting, but not too tight timed runs and fairly logical progression. In short, it’s very player- friendly and I heartily recommend it." - Jay (16-Aug-2024)
"For the most part had a pretty good time with this release! Some pretty cool rooms and some lovely TR goodness to do in them! Only snags in the gameplay for me personally was the obelisk push puzzle and one of the timed runs with the spikes and the jump switch. I didn't care for those 2 bits too much, but the rest of the game really was fun to play and it looked stunning throughout. Would definitely recommend despite the minor personal frustrations." - Feats (12-Aug-2024)
"More straightforward and slightly easier gameplay than some other BtB2024 efforts, but still quite enjoyable - the first part more so than the second. Lacked a wow factor and some 'puzzle'/task solutions were too telegraphed. Also a number of shortcuts avoiding traps were present." - Adrian (11-Aug-2024)
"Another visually low-contrast level from this year's BtB. Technically it was competently built, however. Gameplay was sometimes very good, sometimes... a bit boring. The hieroglyphs push-puzzle included a square the player should have been obliged to push to (based on symbol and orientation) but was not. Maybe I was reading it wrong - it did not affect my score." - Dick (11-Aug-2024)
"This was my ninth foray thrugh BtB-Egypt but sadly the first time I felt a level outstayed its welcome as (so far, I am aware) it was the only one that I couldn't finish in a single sitting. Don't get me wrong, too much of a good thing is not necessarily bad. Besides, the level design here is very clever, the side challenge areas to find key items are fun and well tailored to the atmosphere. All it takes is a keen eye and a look (or three...) to spot the next crevice or opening to proceed. Not many pickups on the ground and yet you can't help but scour every nook and cranny, and not many enemies (up until the grand finale) which is good because they've been buffed up, so every encounter lasts twice as long as it should. All in all, a good, solid, great looking entry and one that no doubt will resonate even better with other players than it did with me. 130 minutes, 5 secrets. 07/24" - Treeble (11-Aug-2024)
"It's obvious that the builder has cared a lot for even small details as this feels extremely polished. Gameplaywise, this was actually bit too easy if you ask me, the exploration (Lara often looking in the right direction) and traps (some are ridiculously simple or you can simply avoid them) could be more elaborate, but the further you progress the better it gets and the longer timed run and the puzzles were rather nicely done. Things like "find the revolver and sight at the same place to shoot a diamond just above" felt rather dull, though. The enemies are quite heavy in this game and you'll certainly need most of the ammo to be found in this game, so be sure to go for the (actually not very well hidden) secrets. While not among the very best of a very good competition, this provides solid 1:10 hours in atmospheric and well-designed settings." - manarch2 (10-Aug-2024)
"Disliked
  • Lava falls set Lara on fire, which is an interesting obstacle, but the radius is too large - Lara would get set on fire even though visually she wasn't touching the lava fall.
Liked
  • There are a couple of nice puzzles to solve involving pushables and floor tiles. Plenty of explanation is given for each one.
  • Timed runs and traps add some edge to the platforming, including some unique ones like wind gusts.
  • Many armed men serve as combat for Lara, but she will also face off against a few harpies and Seth to finish things off.
  • The various cavernous areas and ruins are crafted well, and lighting is used effectively to create a variety of moods.
Time: 2 hours 3 minutes | Difficulty: Medium | Rating: 8.5/10 - Very Good" - JesseG (05-Aug-2024)
"Having played through the BtB24 competition entries in alphabetical order, this was the first level of the bunch that I played – and what a perfect one to start with! With it’s rather compact and insuspicious but still quite spacious map, it’s expertly use of lighting and the packages assets, it’s lightly difficult but versatile and well paced gameplay and a clear tension curve, the builder demonstrates a sense for the right measure. „Naturalist“ lighting for caves projected from openings in the ceiling has become a staple since the remasters. Fortunately, the builder takes it easy with coloured lighting. Instead of bathing everything in a cheesy red and blue contrast like a cop car, coloured lighting is mostly used as an accent in connection with certain textures or environmental media (exception: the blue lighting above the torches seemed a little overstated to me). Without spamming them the builder gives us ample opportunity to appreciate the beautiful objects of this hall of fame package (among other things some incredibly HD looking statues). One area where the level shows off the objects and textures partivularly well is in the small oases/gardens, which provide some of the most beautiful stills in this competition. (Behold, other builders: Less really is more!) The only questionable object placement I remember were the wasing lines in the not very archaeological looking village and the detonating cord made of stones. What I missed were more engaging puzzles; the tile puzzle solved itself after I just walked over it without realizing. Instead the puzzle element is organically present in the traversal through the challenge areas. I found the secrets a bit too easy, but the builder created a seperate area or pathway for almost every secret, which I absolutely love. Lastly, the enemies, precicely the ninjas, could have been a little less tanky, but overall I enjoyed the amount of action and the way saving ammo was rewarded. All in all, the level set is a perfect adventure for an evening, which outshines many a fancy competitor with its well thought-out gameplay and outstanding atmosphere. * Duration: medium (2-3 h) Difficulty: easy Rating: 9 / 9 / 10 / 10" - evinaru_2 (05-Aug-2024)
"Another highly entertaining level here, and yet another rather lengthy entry. It does seem quite fast-paced, in that you keep swiftly moving forward with only the occasional bit of backtracking to do. The only difficult parts tend to be the timed sequences (one of which took me a number of tries to accomplish correctly), otherwise exploration and a bit of puzzle-solving are at the forefront. There's also an obelisk push puzzle which seemed a bit cryptic to me, but I got it working eventually, and is it me or did the ninjas seem more resilient than usual in this level? Overall though, nothing too frustrating and again the environments are gorgeous to look at, so fun for everyone." - Ryan (26-Jul-2024)
"A short and very entertaining level. The beginning is somewhat unspectacular, but this will improve as the game progresses. The areas and rooms are very lovingly designed and well lit, the tasks are varied and the music is appropriately chosen. I found the tasks in the lava area and the time tasks well thought out and not too tight. You shouldn't have any difficulties. All in all, a contribution that leaves little to be desired, not spectacular, but with everything a level needs to have. Highly recommended" - nad (26-Jul-2024)
"A very pleasant BtB level. The gameplay is enjoyable, rather on the easy side, with decent amount of exploration, parkour, traps etc. However, it's pretty basic at times and often is filled with hunt for switches. Could be more creative there. The design on the other hand is, at least to me, flawless. The rooms are created wonderfully with good choice of textures and lighting. Although, I feel like some of them could have benefited from more gameplay because there is not much to do in them. Anyway, it was very fun to play this level and I definitely recommend it to everybody." - BlackWolfTR (18-Jul-2024)
"A bit of everything from basic stuff to good platforming, puzzles, traps, timed runs. Some of the outside areas are very beautiful and atmospheric. I also liked a lot that sense of seclusion, experienced only in TR1, interrupted only by a few animal enemies. A solid and really entertaining and immersive adventure of easy/medium difficulty. A bit less than 3 hours for me." - billie2001 (17-Jul-2024)
"I'll call this one a double feature, because what you get is the equivalent of two distinct stand-alone levels, each of which is excellent in its own right. I'm surprised that to date there have been only two reviews before mine, as progression is quite straightforward and there are no insanely tight timed runs, pixel-perfect platforming exercises or mind-bending puzzles to be negotiated. In fact, the builder has been quite generous with the pickups, such that I never had to be worried about running out of any needed supplies. The textures and lighting are superb, and I found the need to light a flare only once or twice during the entire game. I'm choosing to play these BtB levels in truly random fashion, and the first two I've picked have been top notch in all aspects. This surely bodes well for the competition as a whole, and I'm really looking forward to the remaining entries. High recommendations." - Phil (17-Jul-2024)
"Visually the level is very beautiful, and has a good mixture of large and smaller areas to explore. Gameplay is entertaining, although it got sometimes a little too heavy on opening plenty of doors using switches or items, and performing rather basic jumps. However, there are more engaging tasks as well, such as the heat rooms in the beginning, and later on few timed runs and some platforming sections involving traps. Puzzles are cool even though the solutions to them are quite obvious, except for the tile puzzle near the end. I am not sure what the solution for the puzzle was, but I was able to solve it by randomly running over few tiles. Overall, this is a very good level and definitely worth playing." - Samu (07-Jul-2024)
