Reviewer's comments |
"This a Tomb Raider 1 is set a city type area, but it's asset use is original enough to feel quite different, given Lara's outfit, the name and the dark atmosphere it feels like it evoking Angel of Darkness the most though. While relatively simple in design, it's well executed and some areas make use of quite complex use of objects for a TR1 level, and most objects are custom too. The texturing is well executed, and the lighting makes everything quite visible despite the dark feeling to the atmosphere.
This level takes place in a very small area, but makes decent use of the space to provide plenty to do, with some traps and platforming, and enemies that use the boss humans from TR1 to good effect, along with enough supplies to get by. This level has multiple difficulty settings, and the later ones force save crystals (you are intended to use them on the standard difficulty too, but I didn't realise they were an option until after I finished as save anywhere is the default), I finished the second difficulty and tried the third, and they provide some nice changes to make the level quite a bit harder, so they're give some replay value. Too short for it to explore it's ideas too, but it's good for a very short level with some nice concepts." - Mman (22-Jul-2025) |

"What I Liked
- This short adventure has a good amount of enemies to gun down, some of which are pretty strong toward the end, but weapons are provided at key points to help Lara out.
- There are a fair amount of traps, mostly spikes. They will test Lara's agility but in a way that should be approachable for most players.
- The texturing is good and gives a solid city vibe.

"A short adventure in a tightly-constructed and somewhat spooky urban landscape.
Constructed as a One Room Challenge-type level using just a 25x25 grid, the gameplay
involves some fun traversal and platforming puzzles while hunting for fuses and keys. I
appreciated the way the level gradually opened up so that backtracking was simple. The
level's greatest strength is its objects: almost everything is customized to some extent,
from Lara's outfit and inventory items to the goons from the "Syndicate," and it's fun to
see new coats of paint on the TR1 assets. Textures combine some classics with Angel of
Darkness, giving the level a gritty look that pairs well with the echoes of an urban city
uncannily at odds with the stillness in these streets and warehouses. Cameras helped guide
gameplay. Saving is a challenge which I mostly enjoyed, although there were a few places I
wish I'd had one more crystal while tackling the "iconic" item pickup spots which serve as
the level's three secrets. I reached the finish trigger unexpectedly which meant that, in
order to complete a secret area I already had items to access, I needed to reload from a
much earlier saved game to try again. The somewhat flat lighting is consistent, and
perhaps necessary for a TR1 *and* ORC level, and while I appreciated the visibility of
everything there could have been more contrast. The billboards, TV screens, and some of
the machinery appeared to have adult entertainment themes, which made the alleys seem
seedy. This short challenge entertained me, and although I have not played other levels in
this series yet, I am curious to play more to see this same extent of custom objects." - Cbl (13-Feb-2025) |

"This TR1 level has a somewhat different
appearance to others: a dark, spooky,
slightly post-apocalyptic city inhabited
only by a few cult members. The storyline is
a good one and it sticks to it rather well,
things wrap up quite nicely at the end too.
Save crystals are a feature again here, but
their placement isn't actually too much of a
handicap here. If you're careful, the only
aspect you need to worry about are the
(surprisingly powerful) goon attacks. I did
have just enough supplies to get through,
but you still need to be judicious here.
Otherwise the gameplay is linear throughout,
with not much pause for thought, but
enjoyable enough stuff. Just mind your
jumps! I liked it." - Ryan (14-Dec-2024) |
