Reviewer's comments
"This is an amazing level set, and it is clear that a lot of passion went into creating it. I loved the implementation of 2.5D camera angle, which felt really fresh as there are only a handful of levels that utilize 2D perspective. Being a fan of challenging old-school games, I also enjoyed the use of restricted lives and the checkpoint system where permanent saves are only allowed at the beginning of each level with temporary checkpoints scattered throughout the levels. This means that death carries big consequences, and you will likely find yourself replaying certain parts of the game multiple times. While this can occasionally feel tedious, I would not change the system, since it adds a lot of suspense and forces you to carefully plan every jump. The actual gameplay is highly engaging, featuring inventive platforming with regular wall jumps and traps, thrilling combat, and many thought-provoking puzzles. My only criticism is that you can often arrive to a dead end if you haven’t found a required item or a switch, which forces you to backtrack to where you came from. There is also a fair amount of ladder-climbing and monkey-swinging throughout the game that can feel slightly tedious. However, in the grand scheme of things, none of these things detracted much from my overall experience. In terms of visuals, the game is stunning, including lots of memorable locations to explore with excellent texturing, lighting, and objects. I also loved the ethereal and serene soundtrack, and the storytelling was beautifully done with the use of great voice acting and FMVs. I encountered some technical problems, such as four random crashes with unexplained causes. These crashes seem to occur only on specific systems though, since apparently, no-one else has reported them. I also encountered a bug twice where the camera stopped targeting Lara, and a bug where Lara failed to properly align with a monkey swing and eventually fell down. In the epilogue, the game sent me sometimes to the main menu after dying when it was supposed to load the previous checkpoint. Regardless of the problems mentioned here, I thoroughly enjoyed the experience. It is an audio-visual masterpiece with highly engaging gameplay that offers plenty of fun for players who seek a challenge." - Samu (05-Jun-2026)
"What an ambitious project! It plays like an old-school side-scroller type, like the Gameboy Color titles. The presentation is lovely and the story is very interesting (the game is in French as I write this, but an English version will appear in the future). However, unlike Lara's Gameboy adventures, this levelset uses a lives system, which makes progression very difficult. You can only save at the start of each level; after that you will reach temporary checkpoints that Lara will respawn at if she dies - but only if she has an extra life to spend. Run out of lives, and it's game over and you have to start at the beginning of the level. While this idea supports the old-school nature of the game and rewards exploration, it is going to be a tough sell for some players - they risk repeating 30+ minutes of gameplay, and this risk is amplified by the various bugs introduced by the side-scroller implementation. I must admit that I have cheated my way around this system (see the Notes below) starting at some point in Chapter 4 and as such did not play the game as it was intended, but I was able to enjoy myself much more. Do with this information what you will - in any case, don't be too quick to pass up this unique experience. Pros
  • Engaging story where Lara deals with themes related to loss, including literally engaging in combat with the stages of grief.
  • Side-scroller implementation introduces unique platforming challenges and puzzles as Lara figures out how to reach new areas.
  • Large variety of enemies and traps to overcome.
  • Very strong sense of atmosphere and visual storytelling.
Cons
  • Extra life system makes progression difficult, perhaps too much so
  • Most of the levels have large amounts of backtracking
  • Forced controls (ex. walking, disabling jump) occur frequently and slow down the gameplay
  • Softlocks can occur by Lara's angle becoming unaligned with the level or getting stuck on geometry
Notes
  • Make sure that "No FMV" is not checked in your settings, because this can prevent the game from progressing.
  • The cheat I mentioned above is to rename the file backgame.1 to savegame.1 (or whichever number slot you want) after Lara passes a temporary checkpoint. Doing so turns that checkpoint into a save you can load at will from the menu. Again, this is not the game as intended, and do it at your own risk as it will cause bugs - in my case my inventory got corrupted, removing most of my weapons and ammo. Luckily I ended up having a shotgun with infinite ammo.
Time: 3 hours 39 minutes | Difficulty: Very Hard | Rating: 7.5/10 - Good" - JesseG (28-May-2026)
"The visuals and soundtrack are flawless, and the animation effects are outstanding. The puzzles are well-designed. I really like the torch-throwing mechanic and the dinosaur chase sequences. However, I’m not fond of having to fight multiple consecutive bosses later on, plus the game takes away all the powerful guns and ammo you collected early on. The difficulty level is insanely high, especially the platforming sections. Many wall jumps and grabs are extremely tricky. The final stage has a slippery slope segment where you need to leap and grab a ladder above you—it’s unbelievably hard with awkward camera angles that often get you stuck. I strongly suspect there are flaws in this part of the level design." - cheng (21-May-2026)
