Reviewer's comments
"What does a camel say? A level which impressed me with greatest storytelling creativity and also made me feel like a dirty, filthy, despicable and cancellable person for a reflex of laughing at that one cutscene, funny both in censored and uncensored version (now go on and ban me in half of the community, for I don't care). The cave part drags a bit but the whole thing is a must play. I wouldn't mind a counterpart level with entire camel civilization included, why not." - DJ Full (01-Sep-2024)
"Another longer, multi-level adventure and this one is truly unique in the way it tells you a story. Very creatively done and wonderfully set in scene. You will definitely laugh a few times along the way. Surrounding Temples (30 min, 1/1 Secret): The first part lets you in easy with gentle and straightforward exploration and a few small puzzles to solve. The highlight is a slightly different kind of timed run involving a camel and some water ;) The Dungeons (60 min, 3/4 Secrets): It gets more challenging here, but if you keep your eyes open the gameplay always flows very well. The dungeon setting is somewhat gruesome but not too bad and could even have been much more spooky than it actually comes across. You get to use some tools of the trade, like the torch and a shovel and there is another clever timed run with a twist. I had one stuck moment here with a sneaky drop through closing trapdoors move. The Great Palace of Abydos (40 min, 1/3 Secrets): Gameplay continues to be fluent in the palace as you search for four pillars. There is a small boss fight with two Hammer Gods as well, but not a big challenge to master that one. Very creative use of the mechanical beetle, as yet again something unexpected happens and the solution to that problem is very unique as well ;) The Artefact (35 min, 0/1 Secrets): The grande finale with four different types of challenges to master, none of which are too long or too difficult really. The actual boss fight however will keep you on your toes and will have you watch out for Lara's health along the way as you have plenty of work to do in order to defeat your primal enemy. I did not like that after that defeat you get another horde of bad guys, but that did not spoil my overall fun and also there is a great reward here for obtaining at least 5 secrets and another if you get all 9, so definitely worth hunting for those! Wonderful and well rounded adventure with a huge entertainment factor. Must play! (Total: 165 min, 5/9 Secrets)" - MichaelP (01-Sep-2024)
"This is the first custom level I’ve played that comes with a trigger warning. How weird that it should be this level, which leans heavily into humor and trying to make the player laugh. I guess humor is subjective, and it is a bit hit or miss in this level, too. I quite liked the camel messing things up for Lara near the start of the level (which also makes for a creative timed run), but then later it turns out to be magic and Lara has several long conversations with it that mostly miss the mark. The time travel into the past is a cute joke, and a couple of the challenges towards the end are pretty creative. This is also where we get the moment that would have earned this level a PEGI 18 rating. Maybe it’s because I think Jonah is useless, but it did not go in the direction I thought it would. I was expecting violence. I was expecting war crimes. Very disappointing. My favorite joke is barely even a joke, and that’s the “45 minutes” later bit, which came out of nowhere. These are the memorable parts of the level, and the rest is pretty standard fare. While the level certainly has its moments, most of it is just average gameplay in average environments. The gameplay is generally simple, and even though my net gaming time was 90 minutes, the level felt shorter than levels of a similar length because of its straightforwardness. Although I did have to replay a chunk of level because I’d missed a secret with no way of going back, since the level has different endings depending on how many secrets you find. A fun idea on paper, but very stressful in practice (that said, it’s very obvious what the different endings are so it wasn’t worth worrying about in hindsight). A third of the level takes place in an underground prison, and that’s probably the least interesting part because it’s not exactly an interesting setting. The author does use colors a lot to try to liven things up a bit, but it’s still pretty dreary. When you’re not traipsing through prison cells, the level looks nice enough, but doesn’t really stand out among the other levels in this competition. So maybe focusing on humor wasn’t such a bad idea after all. Because when I think back on BtB 2024, the talking camel will be one of the things I remember." - Magnus (31-Aug-2024)
"I can’t remember when I’ve had more fun playing a custom level. The game is divided into several sections, each with its own unique flavor and sprinkled throughout with humorous asides. The PDA apologizes in advance to those who may have been offended by one sequence, but I failed to see anything there that might cause a person of normal sensibilities to get his or her back up. Anyway, the surroundings from start to finish are lusciously rendered, and all gameplay elements should be managed with a little persistence by players of all skill levels. For the last secret, I arrived a few seconds late to get past the timed door and finished the game before going back to conquer that timed gauntlet with a few more tries. The trick is to save frequently as you make good progress. The extended boss fight at the end was the perfect capper to a three-hour adventure that deserves to place near the top in the final standings. Highly recommended." - Phil (28-Aug-2024)
"This release was the last of the levels for me to play out of the 16 from this competition and honestly it was a great way to round it all off. Had so much fun playing this from start to finish! So many creative set pieces and the gameplay while challenging in parts was fun and engaging throughout. Highlights for me was the scenes with the camel, the visit to a familiar scene from the classic games and creative use of the swan dive haha! To address the elephant in the room... The controversial scene. I'm not easily offended and it didn't offend me in the slightest if I'm completely honest. Just felt it wasn't really needed. There was enough incredible and funny moments in the game without it. In the grand scheme of things its a minor nitpick in what was a fantastic level set. Couldn't recommend it enough I'd say this was easily top 5, if not one of my top 3 levels out the lot." - Feats (26-Aug-2024)
"What I liked about the level: 1) Very nice looking beginning with so many sunflowers. 2) Nice to get Uzis early on. 3) The water coming out of the fountain was exquisite and delicate. First time I’ve seen of this kind of water flow. Very beautiful. 4) So clever to make the spikes triggered with the camel drinking the water. 5) Thank you to the builder for spacing out the enemies so that they can be picked off individually instead of en masse. 6) Normally I’m not fond of overly colourful levels in realistic environments but this one is fresh, unique and adds to the fun factor in this level set. 7) The timed run over the spiked columns was so much fun. They were kindly spaced making it super fun to run, jump and navigate through. 8) Very wise to tell the player in the diary to extinguish the torch as too many active flames could cause issues. 9) Thank you to the builder for giving a camera shot when picking up a key to show where it goes. 10) The waterfall room in Level 3 is stunning. 11) Well I just loved the beta level. That was so cool. What I didn’t like or thought could be improved: 1) Not sure but looks like the water or sand fountain coming out of the Anubis mouth at the beginning of the level has not been activated maybe? 2) Not a bad thing but still very sneaky to have screen notes saying the number of secrets after the player has already passed the secret location. 3) Just a wishlist but was really hoping the blue flames on the pedestals were health refilling stations. 4) Not sure of the significance of the floor lever activating spikes in a small room. 5) Sort of a cheap trick to make the player jump into the collapsing floor before it closes. I spent a long time running around and then consulted the walkthrough. I don’t even know how one would get back up for a redo. 6) Brutal final boss. 7) The textures that were not ladders in the final boss area were very similar to ladder textures, so it was very confusing exactly where the ladder was when you’re running around trying to avoid blasts from Seth enemies. Conclusion: This level set was so kind to players at the beginning and I loved every minute of it. But the final boss fight was brutal so much so that I considered not finishing it. Luckily, I did finish but it was super tough. Due to the tight timed runs, tricky jumps and brutal ending, not suitable for beginners." - Lizard Queen (25-Aug-2024)
"Congratulations on such a good and efficient use of the assets! Thank you for gifting this game to the community. I really enjoyed the whole experience. I would only change the secrets. I only managed to get the one for the timed-run challenge. I was pretty thorough in my search, and when I looked the secrets up, I realized most of them would required mandatory use of "cheats", they are just too tough. When you tie secrets to the type of ending you get (I checked all three on Lore's video-walkie), it is not great to have them be so hard to get. Nobody likes to get the bad ending, it's just nasty. I even managed to get through the pickaxe part without the pickaxe... Still, I couldn't get more than 1 out of 9 secrets... Please. Otherwise, it's 10s all the way. I loved the story and the humor, the settings and the way they are presented, the amazing Easter egg, the use of music, the flow of the levels and pretty much everything within. Keep 'em coming!" - MigMarado (21-Aug-2024)
"This is four level set that has you grudually progressing into a palace. Like Protecting Isis, which I just played before, this level uses a lot of colourful textures to give an almost Persian atmosphere to the theme. It also makes good use of objects (namely a Camel) to create some unique moments and support the storyline. The lighting is generally consistently decent, although the creepier parts in the dungeons could have had a few darker areas, as it's still mostly quite bright. Overall the scale of the individual areas isn't too big compared to other entries, but those smaller areas are intricately designed and detailed.
Gameplay provides a good range of challenges without getting too obtuse, although there are a couple of trickier moments, and it does a good job slowly ramping the difficulty, but even then stuff like the final trap course has a time-limit that's fully optional for non-secret progression so players can take their time if they want. While there are four levels they aren't too long individually. The story is a large element here and, despite the dark sounding backstory it's actually quite a comedic set with clever object use and writing to set up some funny and "meta" moments. There was one tile jumping puzzle I didn't fully get the logic of even when looking up the solution, but that's the only notable difficulty I had. There's also a story element to the secret hunt as it changes the ending, although it would be nice to have more chances to backtrack for some as they're mostly lost if you miss them when going through an area the first time. There was also a skippable sequence that the build-up made appear explicit but it's actually pretty tame and entirely implication (although it was apparently patched to tone it down a little so I'm not sure how the original was). Another great entry, with the light-hearted story giving it a unique style compared to the others so far." - Mman (21-Aug-2024)
"Clever and humorous gameplay make this level-set quite unique. Visuals are not strong, but not bad either. The timed sequence for the last secret was fun, easy to do if you ignore the timer, but with a couple of tries is doable within the time limit. The only thing I didn't like was the final boss. I found hard to figure out what was to be done under pressure, and the timers would be fine if there were not unkillable enemies constantly in the way. This part killed my otherwise great experience. The enemies that come afterwards are not a problem. Although I had all the secrets, I preferred to leave with a camel friend than a Vizier. LOL I highly recommend this adventure, but bear in mind it gets challenging towards the end." - billie2001 (16-Aug-2024)
"What an innovative, imaginative and thoroughly all round entertaining raid this is. Plus (and this is not something I ever expected to say) if there ever is a category for best starring role for a camel then this would win hands down. There’s a great deal of humour laced throughout the game which nicely compliments the well rounded gameplay. Some of the timed runs and pixel perfect jumps kept me occupied for longer than they should have done, but it was all such good fun I didn’t mind a bit. Be sure to save up your energy for the final section - traps gauntlet and boss ending." - Jay (16-Aug-2024)
"My favourite so far: engaging gameplay, contrasting settings (between the temples & the prison) , nice wash of colours over everything, so we're not just seeing sandy textures everywhere. I agree with JesseG about the glitch move used in the cistern room. I remembered his review - that's the only reason I tried the move. I suspect its inclusion has cost this level a few points - maybe even its chance to win - players don't like seeing this sort of thing in regular gameplay. For me it was an isolated blip so I'll let it slide. Managed to get enough secrets to liberate the camel, which is something I've always wanted to do. Great level." - Dick (11-Aug-2024)
"Although not my favorite in the competition, I'm sure this will rank very highly towards the end — and with good reason. The author has made use of pretty much everything you can think of, plus a dozen or so things you wouldn't even think of seeing, even late in the game the author keeps throwing curve balls at you. Despite its length, I managed to finish it on my own on a completely blind playthrough, I did get lost now and then as there are just so many distinct landmarks but generally speaking your next goal is always clear, you just need to figure out a way across: if you can see a place, there's probably a way to reach it, and sometimes it goes a long way around. It's a constant and clever use of backtracking by giving you different routes through the same areas, but as you make progress it becomes something quite satisfactory. The cursed camel progression was such a neat detail, from start to finish, and while I did get it out I couldn't break the curse. 2h30min, 5 secrets. 07/24" - Treeble (11-Aug-2024)
"This is easily my favourite level so far, mainly because there are so many fantastic gameplay ideas put to very good use here - the camel scenes are hilarious but all the rest is quite remarkable as well, especially the challenges at the end which are the icing on the cream. It's not a full 10 in gameplay as there are some almost too easy parts and the game is flowing too quickly in the first levels, but the ending parts are just so exceptional that I wanted to honor them. The looks are very good too, texturing and lighting are almost flawless but the architecture wasn't as great as in some other levels this year, cameras and sounds are solid but not in the top league (and the old bug when the ninjas start shooting, even if intended (?), was rather nasty). The quest for the nine secrets was, on the other side, very nice and even more rewarding, and the final fights were very well done. Overall, perhaps the best BtB '24 in terms of gameplay, but there are some excellent levels left so we'll see... Finished in 1:30 hours." - manarch2 (07-Aug-2024)
"This is the BTB 2024 level with the funniest story/gameplay ideas that casually breaks the forth wall and goes meta with it’s self-reflective humor about Tomb Raider and level building. The builder demonstrates that you don’t have to be elite in every discipline (aesthetics above all), if you manage to translate an engaging storyline or theme into gameplay.

The plot: While Lara is doing her usual thing somewhere in Egypt, she enters into a collab with an unlikely protagonist who turns from a nuisance into a friend, which leaves us with several more or less heartbreaking endings, depending on how much secrets you collect. On our way we traverse through an egyptian torture dungeon, whose inmates were freaking GIANTS judging by the size of their skeletons, through very colorful temples with and without water leaks and weed problems, through some sort of techno-egyptian VR simulator and in the meantime through Lara’s unconscious!

The later was particularly refreshing. …A sanctuary of forbidden desire gleaming in red light, sealed off by thick walls and barbed wire – and whitin: a symbolic princess waiting to be rescued, to liberate us from the prison of repressive sublimation!… Because I downloaded early, I enjoyed the „uncensored“ version of what I guess was supposed to be the „controversial“ scene described in the builder’s notes (lol, not the „dildo“!?...). – Sure, the voice actor might not have been happy about it, but it’s so harmless that it‘ hardly worth mentioning. What's funnier about this than the late-adolescent humor is how it ridicules the comically obvious sexual tension that runs through the reboot games. I can only shake my head at the pettiness of some fans who want to deny the overly sexualized Lara to get off herself at some point.

While much has been said about the varied, gripping gameplay of this level, there are also the less sexy aspects to talk about. Unlike previous reviewers, I wasn’t always thrilled about the texturing, lighting and atmosphere in this level. Starting with the sometimes very basic geo, texture choices seemed a little haphazard or unsuitable to me in some places (i. e. flower textures an to walls inside the temple) as did the object placement (too much flowers slammed everywhere, a shovel piece hanging in the air and again: how HUGE are these skulls?!). There was some disproportionately thick fog in some rooms that diddn’t work well with the lighting on my monitor. Combined, the at times extreme blue/green-ish or red lighting made the level look as if a candy factory had exploded inside the temple. While the music selection was mostly fitting, there were some misses, like in the first lava cave, and the music triggers in transition between rooms could perhaps have been optimized.

Conclusion: There are more than enough fun ideas in this level to keep you enjoying it untill the end! And if something seem’s fishy – you know which hunchbacked prankster is responsible… ?

"All of the BtB entries I've played thus far have ranged from very good to outstanding, so it's pretty darn difficult for me to choose definite favourites. If I had to (with 5 levels left to review), I'd say that this ties for first place in gameplay terms with Goddess of Time (my overall favourite so far), with Challenge of the High Priest not too far behind. The visuals are striking from start to finish, with vivid yet not overdone colours and crisp textures, not overly ambitious yet still memorable setpiece areas and great atmosphere. It's undoubtedly one of the most beautiful levels in the contest, which is saying something indeed. Aside from the usual Tomb Raider gameplay (of which there is a great variety already), there's also some unique twists with Lara being constantly hindered by a desperate camel (somewhat understandably desperate as it turns out), the quirky move of manipulating a trapdoor to quickly drop down to a lower level, which is rather a dicey thing to do anyway but I digress, and most of all the beta room that makes up nearly the entire end section of the game. It's so creative in itself that I can't fathom how the builder put it all together in the time frame. I've got a feeling I know for sure who built this one just because of that. Quite brilliant all round. Hugely recommended." - Ryan (27-Jul-2024)
"New ideas, the courage to jump back in time and a timerun where running instead of sprinting is sometimes the better solution make this level a very special one. Very well designed rooms, varied and interesting tasks, good lighting and very well used music round off the whole thing. Almost every wish is fulfilled here. Highly recommended." - nad (26-Jul-2024)
"Notes
  • I chose to skip the optional content referenced in the notes. I do not know what it is, and it will not be reflected in this review.
Disliked
  • This entry requires players to use an exploit where they have Lara throw a switch to close a trapdoor, but drop down through it right before it closes. This feels wrong to me, as if I'm using a glitch to short-circuit the level, and would have never guessed it was the actual solution until I saw it being used in playthroughs.
Liked
  • There is quite a bit of light-hearted humor in this adventure that had me laugh out loud several times, but it adds another dimension to the gameplay as well, such as Lara going to the "beta" build of the level to get around traps.
  • I liked the puzzles in this adventure, particularly the floor tile puzzle which I had to stare at for a bit before the solution came to me.
  • There aren't too many traps outside of one challenging sequence, which I enjoyed trying to finish in the optional time limit.
  • While I would have preferred being able to dispatch the Seth enemies, the final battle was still a good challenge to end the adventure with.
  • The visuals are a consistently strong quality, especially the lighting and fog.
Time: 2 hours 39 minutes | Difficulty: Very Hard | Rating: 9/10 - Excellent" - JesseG (20-Jul-2024)
"I enjoyed this level and particularly the gameplay, which is varied and very engaging. The level offers a good mixture of platforming, timed runs, exploration, and smartly designed puzzles involving unique ideas, some of which I have not seen before. The level is also filled with lots of great humor which gave me a good laugh several times. The parts involving a camel were especially hilarious. Visually the level looks decent although I think that the architecture is not the most impressive the level lacks memorable areas that would stand out from the rest. Texturing is great though, and I also liked the lighting, which is atmospheric and colorful. I highly recommend this level." - Samu (13-Jul-2024)
"An awesome BtB levelset consisting of four levels. It includes some really awesome, abstract and humorous ideas. There is plenty of exploration, parkour, timed runs and traps. The visuals are very good and the four levels are pleasant to the eye. I highly recommend this amazing level for everyone." - BlackWolfTR (10-Jul-2024)
